 MTV.com - Smog
An under-recognized pioneer of the lo-fi revolution, Smog was essentially the alias of one Bill Callahan, an enigmatic singer/songwriter whose odd, fractured music neatly epitomized the tenets and excesses of the home-recording boom.
Led off by the remarkable "Bathysphere" (its title a fitting metaphor for Callahan's self-absorption) and climaxed by the epic "Prince Alone in the Studio" (a virtual theme song for a solitary creative existence), the LP reflected his bitter obsessions with stunning clarity, emerging as a triumph of abject failure.
The peripatetic Callahan relocated to Chicago prior to the release of 1999's Knock Knock, resurfacing in the spring of 2000 with Dongs of Sevotion and the Strayed EP.

The first thing I noticed was that, although the backing band was competent, the musicians seemed to pay more attention to Callahan's playing than to their own.
While on the surface this would seem to be a good thing (after all Smog really is Bill Callahan), the emphasis this placed on Callahan's somewhat rudimentary strumming highlighted a certain void in his technique.
Still, somehow, the luster was off of Smog's performance and the overall effect they had on me was one of slight disappointment (and perhaps disillusionment).

The band's compositions are long, owing a bit to the 70s progressive rock, and even some of the 60s psychedelia.
Callahan was joined by a touring band consisting of Jim White (of Dirty Three) on drums, Colleen Burke (of We Ragazzi) on bass, and Jason Dezember on electric guitar.
Callahan's mood was hard to read, but he did perform his silly shuffle (this largely consists of hopping side-to-side from one outstretched leg to the other) at various points throughout the night as well as a "dance" move involving bending down on trembling knees.

Beginning in the late 1980s, when he first began to release lo-fi home-recordings under the Smog moniker, and continuing without pause through this year’s Supper, Bill Callahan has recorded a body of work as diverse as it is accomplished.
(Smog) records not only stand apart from their dozens of slack imitators (“Recommended if you like Smog” is probably the most grasping of the typical blurbs found on indie rock press sheets) but also, to a lesser extent, from each other.
Live (Smog) shows tend to be liberally freckled with old favorites, and Callahan makes a conscious point of resuscitating new-old songs before departing for a tour.
