  Stanley Steam Car Smokebox
The square section at the lower right serves to connect the smokebox with the exhaust duct that is located in front of the firewall.
The circular hole offset from the center of the smokebox is for the "trap door" (shown with the door closed in the photograph).
Opening the smokebox when stopping the car after a long drive, and especially before bringing a lighted blow torch near the boiler, will allow any accumulated combustible gasses to be released.

Smokebox, a “groove -metal pop-core” band from Sabattus, have started to make that dream a reality, recently signing a deal for a full-length album with Statue, a small record company out of Lomita, California.
Smokebox is a mixture of all that is good with the new rock scene, from the heavy riffs to the experimental vocals.
Smokebox have played many shows in Maine, and Servidio lists the Asylum as his favorite Portland venue, for its “cool vibe.” Recently, they’ve been playing out of state, mostly in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, where original metal acts seem to have a larger audience.

The inner firebox is supported from the outer firebox by the foundation ring at the bottom, crown stays at the top and palm stays between the firebox tubeplate and the boiler barrel.
The smokebox is an extension of the front end of the boiler barrel.
It protects the firebox tubeplate from the direct flame of the fire, radiates heat to prevent rapid fluctuation of the tubeplate temperature, and ensures thorough combustion of volatiles by lengthening their path from the fire to the tubeplate.

NOTTINGHAM VICTORIA - Steam Locomotive Design Topics
The steam first passes from the boiler, through the regulator, into the superheater header, simply a sealed box in the smokebox, and then on to the superheater elements, which lie in the flue tubes of the boiler.
Non-SC locomotives had to be raked out after each run to remove the large quantity of cinders and soot that collected in the smokebox as a result of being caried from the firebox through the flue tubes in the gases, especially after hard running.
The heat of the fire boiled the water (light blue) in the drums and pipes to form steam (yellow)in the steam drum B, which was then colected by a collector pipe E and channeled to a regulatorF.

The smokebox is back, being machined and should be fitted and riveted around the end of May. No word yet on the metallurgical tests; that has taken a bit of a back-burner.
The original smokebox was used as a pattern with the numerous markings noting locations where holes were to be drilled for hanging piping and various appliances.
The Museum did post some recent photos of the restoration on their web-site; the smokebox is riveted to the boiler, as of last Friday, the attachment to the saddle was being made.

The idea behind the extended smokebox was to allow the cinders to collect in a series of screens inside the smokebox so they didn't get blown out the stack with the exhaust.
Over time, the extension was proved to be unnecessary for that task, and the smokeboxes "shrank" again, but from the 1890s to the 1920s, they were fairly common on locomotives.
For whatever reason, be it the placement of the headlight, or the position of the stack relative to the lenght of the smokebox, this feature is not as noticable on the Colorado locos--especially the outside frame Ks--as it is on the eastern locomotives.

When she arrived on the ETandWNC, she was a wood burner with a large smokestack, short smokebox, and large cab.
When she was converted to burn coal, she got a straight stack, extended smokebox, and a new cab, similar to the one on the original Bachmann locomotive.
A new smokebox front was cut from styrene, though the door is from the original Bachmann boiler.

Operation of Steam Locomotive Type Boilers and their Associated Fittings
The smokebox is an extension at the front end of the boiler barrel, which together with the blast pipe and the chimney, forms the means of producing an induced draught to the air required for combustion of the fuel in the firebox.
This is fitted to the smokebox to prevent the emission of live ashes from the fire being ejected from the chimney when the engine is working hard.
The superheater header is attached to the smokebox tubeplate at the outlet of the main internal steam pipe from the regulator valve and is placed horizontally across the top of the smokebox.

The fitting of two J Cocks at the smokebox is the reason for the "pistol" shaped casing which Keith queries, as the casing widens out to cover these two cocks which are inevitably spaced further apart than the oil pipes which feed them.
Once inside the smokebox the LH and RH pipes were led into the LH and RH steam pipes respectively, whereas the original single cylinder oil pipe had been connected via a distributor or splitter fitting; 2 way for 2 cylinder engines and 4 way for 4 cylinder engines.
This involved the disconnection of the smokebox oil pipes, and running pipes from the J Cock for a short distance down the outside of the smokebox before disappearing into the top collar of the outside steam pipe casings.

To do this, I needed to extend the smokebox forward to compensate not only for the distance I moved the boiler back, but for the fact that the smokebox on the prototype was extended.
Once the smokebox was in place, I could mark the location of the new smokestack opening.
