Smoky Mountain Wrestling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Smoky Mountain Wrestling was an organization staging professional wrestling in the Appalachian area of the United States from October 1991 to December 1995, when it was run by Jim Cornette.
The first Smoky Mountain Tag Team Champions were crowned in a tournament final on April 23, 1992 in Harrogate, TN when The Heavenly Bodies defeated The Fantastics.
Smoky Mountain was, however, the birthplace of the controversial "Gangstas" gimmick, where African American wrestlers New Jack and Mustafa would cut promos about activist Medgar Evers, use fried chicken and watermelons as props and win matches as a result of a two count (rather than the conventional three count), puportedly due to Affirmative Action.

That same company attempts to have wrestling deregulated by a number of state athletic commissions in a move that has major ramifications for the business and the states involved and yes, again, we learn that wrestling is fake.
One of the biggest and most popular stars of our era is sued by a major wrestling company over a breach of contract which has quite the impact on an industry run by two companies in the middle of a bitter battle for supremacy and you guessed it, the public learns that wrestling is fake.
Most newspaper readers understand that about wrestling so a reporter who concentrates on exposing a business that has been overexposed for decades is not doing his or her readers a service.

Prince Kharis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The gimmick was based on a wrestler who had wrestled in the Continental Wrestling Association as "The Mummy" in the 60's and 70's and had feuded with local star Jerry Jarrett.
After a short feud with the Dirty White Boy for the SMW heavyweight title, (done to justify the television time spent to create the character) Kharis disappeared from Smoky Mountain Wrestling, and the wrestling landscape, never to be seen again.
His impact on the wrestling world could best be described as "minimal." Rob Mayze would never again appear in a significant role in professional wrestling.

The premise is simple - the DVD is a collection of matches from the now defunct Smoky Mountain Wrestling promotion of the early-mid 90s, featuring wrestlers who went on to greater fame working for the WWF, WCW and/or ECW.
It's funny, even though these matches aren't from all that long ago (the oldest match on the collection is about 10 years old) it is amazing how many of these wrestlers are practically unrecognizable in comparison to their current persona.
Since Cornette ran Smoky Mountain Wrestling, there is nobody better to provide behinds the scenes stories from the territory.
