Smyth County was formed on February 23, 1832 from Washington and Wythe counties.
Alexander Smyth (1765 – April 17, 1830) was an American lawyer, soldier, and politician from Virginia, who served in the United States House of Representatives and as a general during the War of 1812.
The Eastern Shore of Virginia is on the Atlantic Coast of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Anderson, one of the most important American writers of the 20th century, was already world-famous when he bought the Smyth County News and the Marion Democrat, its sister paper, in 1927.
He said that he had moved to Southwest Virginia in 1925 because he "had grown tired of city life and wanted the quiet intimacy of life in a smaller place..." He added that he bought the two Marion papers because he found that country life did not keep him "busy enough to be happy."
Anderson edited the two Smyth County papers until January 1, 1932, when he officially transferred ownership of them to his son Robert, who had quit work at the Philadelphia Bulletin to help his father.

Smyth County, Virginia Sheriff David Bradley has released  information about a triple homicide that happened Sunday night in the Seven Mile Ford Community.
In a printed news release, Sheriff Bradley said 19 year old John Ray Gullion of Marion, Virginia, has been arrested and charged with capital murder, and other charges are pending.
Authorities say around 8:15 Sunday night, the sheriff's office got a call from a person who said a man had shot three people.  Authorities say the Gullion disposed of a stolen truck in a quarry hole in Saltville, Virginia.  The sheriff also says a gun was recovered.   No word on a motive in the slayings.
