Snaefellsjokull is a glacier at the western end of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula (Snaefell means "snow mountain," Snaefellsnes means "Snow Mountain Peninsula").
It was made famous by Jules Verne in Journey to the Centre of the Earth--it is from here where the hero descends into a crater under the glacier to begin the journey.
Shanna: Snaefellsjokull is fairly small, but that could be because it’s on top of one of the most active volcanoes in Iceland.

This activity was unlike the earlier volcanism, because of the lack of drift and the different composition of the tephra.
The Snaefellsjokull area extends from Mt. Maelifell in the east and the headland Ondverdarnes in the west.
The lava fields Hnausahraun, Klifhraun, Hellnahraun and Vaejuhraun are probably younger than 1750 years, but the Haahraun was created by an eruption of the main crater of the Snaefellsjokull 1750 years ago.

Snaefellsjokull is one of the more popular and accessible volcanoes in Iceland, located beside the Atlantic at the western tip of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula northwest of the capital of Reykjavik.
With a history of climbing dating back over two centuries, Snaefellsjokull makes an easy ascent and descent on skis throughout the winter and spring, although the summit pinnacle apparently requires some moderate ice climbing.
However, the weather in this part of Iceland is typically even stormier than in the rest of the country, since it is exposed directly to the prevailing gales from the west and southwest.

Jokull is the Icelandic word for glacier, and Snaefellsjokull is a glacier perched on top of a volcano situated on a peninsular l00km northwest of Reykjavik.
On the way to Snaefellsjokull we stopped off at Hussafell, where there is a very unusual waterfall.
I found a launch on the opposite river bank, and made a few flights across the river whilst Kjartan, a local landscape photographer, took some pictures of me flying low over the river with the waterfall on the opposite bank as the backgound.

With only two days left we thought we better leg it across to the western side of Iceland to see the icecap Snaefellsjokul and the crater walk Holly found in the Lonely Planet.
The wind had picked up by then and I was glad to get back into the car to start our drive up to Snaefellsjokull and try to see the glacier.
The road up to the peak was steep and rocky so I had to drive slowly to avoid damage to the car or worse, a flat tyre.
