Snake Island (Black Sea) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Snake Island (Romanian: Insula şerpilor, Ukrainian: ostriv Zmiyinyy) - also known as Serpent Island - is an isle in the Black Sea, currently claimed by Romania, but administered by Ukraine and included in its Kiliya raion of Odes'ka oblast'.
The island is a limestone formation located 35 km from the coast, east of the mouth of the Danube River.
These "servicemen" have been brought on the island despite the 1997 Treaty between Romania and Ukraine which specifically mentioned that no Ukrainian offensive weapons would be placed on Snake Island and that the island would be declared "uninhabited".

History of The Brown Tree Snake Invasion on Guam
In 1968, the snake had reached the extreme northern end of the island and was present throughout the island, although its densities varied widely from region to region.
Snakes began affecting the birds in the north-central and extreme northern parts of the island in the 1970s, and most native forest species were virtually extinct when they were listed as threatened or endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1984.
Although larger snakes are showing signs of stress, exhibited by low fat reserves, the ability to shift from birds to rodents or lizards has enabled the snake to reach and maintain extraordinarily high densities of as many as 13,000 per square mile.

Identification of tiger snakes by the presence of stripes is unreliable, since this varies with the seasons and the maturity of the snake, and there is also an unstriped fl species (N. ater).
Tiger snakes are active on warm summer evenings, and are attracted to farms and outer suburban houses, where they hunt mice and rats, and where they may be trodden on by unwary people barefoot at night.
The Chappell Island tiger snake is the most prolific venom producer of all the fl tiger snakes, with an average venom yield of 74mg, and a maximum recorded yield of 388mg.

The snakes, which can reach more than eight feet in length, are found in densities as high as 13,000 individuals per square mile in certain areas of the island, although 2,000 to 3,000 snakes per square mile is closer to the average.

The architecture of the construction and of the other ruins found on the island is specific to the epoch called Cyclopean, resembling the masonry found in Thessaly and Thrace: defense walls constructed without mortar, using enormous blocks of uncut stone; the white blocks of limestone impress the eye.
This established that “the Serpents’ Island, located in the Black Sea, east of the mouth of the Danube, is included in the territory of the USSR.” The island’s ownership had not been affected either by Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, or by the Peace Treaty of 1947.
