I suspect that the culprit is either the freezing procedure or the storage of the frozen blocks.
Snap freezing, which I assume means plunging a specimen into a beaker of liquid nitrogen or pentane, is not usually sufficient to freeze large histological specimens without ice crystal damage.
The simplest solution for preventing freezing damage in routine histological specimens, which are to be sectioned in a cryostat, is probably to cryoprotect the fixed material before plunging in liquid nitrogen.

Another scenario suggested for the "hot water freezing" story is the possibility of supercooling and snap-freezing by the hot water.
There is in fact a large body of literature about initially hot water freezing faster than cold water and this phenomenon has been labeled the "Mpemba effect" (see references).
Supercooling to -5 C or lower is cited and it is suggested that both the initially hot and the initially cold water supercool.

This rosy picture was eventually scotched by those pesky scientists, who pointed out that freezing a body totally in liquid nitrogen would have a devastating effect on the body.
On the other hand, with the US and other capitalist governments refusing to give serious heed to the environmental concerns of the scientific community, it may be that in a couple of hundred years' time our snap- frozen corpses might be welcomed not as future (live) residents but simply as preserved sources of genetic material.
Nevertheless, while acknowledging the catastrophic damage that freezing would cause to a deceased person's body, the magazine's editor sought refuge in the still largely theoretical concept of nano-technology (engineering — and presumably body repairs — using the manipulation of matter at the molecular level).
