Although a branch rail line was put through to Snape in 1888 it was only ever used for goods traffic to the Snape Maltings.
As a small inland port, with the growth of the Snape Maltings it was, by the end of the 19th century, also a remarkably busy one.
Snape, which as remarked earlier, probably had over 100 inhabitants in the 11th century, was slow to expand and four hundred years later had only grown to 485 souls.

It takes place each June in the Aldeburgh area of Suffolk, centred on the main concert hall at Snape Maltings.
Over the years the festival grew and took in additional venues such as Aldeburgh's fifteenth-century church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul and venues in nearby Orford, Blythburgh and Framlingham.
In the mid-1960s the Festival gained a new and much larger concert hall with the conversion of Snape Maltings, which includes one of the largest mid nineteenth-century barley malthouses in East Anglia.

Snape Maltings Concert Hall was the venue in the sixties for a BBC television series Jazz at the Maltings, when Clive Strutt captured atmospheric stills of jazz greats such as Dave Brubeck, Buddy Rich, Count Basie and Oscar Peterson.
After it became uneconomic to run as a maltings, part of the complex, the malt house, was leased to the Aldeburgh Festival in 1965.
Snape Maltings is still evolving with a multi-million pound development planned for the remainder of the redundant buildings.

This was the maltings which he had been able to see from his house for so many years.
The purpose-built (or I should say substantially adapted) concert hall at The Maltings, Snape had a Royal opening by H.M. The Queen, in June 1967 only to burn to the ground two years later.
With this completed the BBC broadcast the work in a studio performance in February 1976 and the stage premiere of this version was given at the Maltings in June.

It's that time of the year again - the arrival of August means for the Snape Maltings Concert Hall to remove the first 10 or so rows of seats, to make space for people sitting on the ground.
For the concert in Snape, Terrafolk had invited a couple of special guests: Guitarist Tommy Emmanuel and singer/songwriter Neil Innes who used to work with Monty Pythons on their film music.
The Snape audience, for this concert more senior than I have ever seen it, was taken aback by the sheer power of the music.

When I went to see the Rambert Dance Company last year at Snape, it was the first time I had ever been to see contemporary dance.
I was stunned by the energetic dancers, atmospheric lighting and the sheer emotion of choreography that did not necessarily tell a story but could still express the mood and ideas of the music..
When I saw this on the program I assumed, wrongly, it was a repeat of the first item in their previous tour, but this was a different dance entirely.

Snape got a different programme from anywhere else on Rambert's current tour - starting and ending with the pieces by Rafael Bonachela and Michael Clark which have been seen elsewhere, but filled out with a different Mahler ballet (Dark Elegies instead of Songs of a Wayfarer) and real Ashton instead of reworked Ashton (hooray).
I'd guess the Snape stage, which has no wings, had something to do with the change, but whatever the reason, the result was a very satisfying programme.
Bonachela's Irony of Fate is a fine showpiece for the clarity and strength of Amy Hollingsworth's dancing, and it's also more than that: interesting and cogent, it's the piece I like most so far from this choreographer.

Max Fordham, working with Arup, did the mechanical and electrical design for the conversion of the Maltings at Snape in Suffolk into a concert hall in the late 1960s, under the guidance of Benjamin Britten.
The hall is the centre of the annual Aldeburgh Festival and is famous worldwide for its excellent acoustics.
Improved ventilation and lighting were provided in the auditorium and an energy-efficient cooling system using ground water was introduced.

This mug has Snape Maltings 1859 - 1959 on the side of it and think it was given to all employees there to celebrate it's first 100 years.
The Maltings closed in 1965 and was then made into the Snape Maltings Concert Hall and was opened by the Queen.
I loved the Plough and Sail and they were one phone number away from our number at Corner Cottage (We were Snape 412, the Plough and Sail was Snape 413).
