  Snellen chart Ophthalmology
Snellen charts are named after the Dutch ophthalmologistHermann Snellenwho developed the chart in 1862.
The symbols on an acuity chart are formally known as "optotypes." In the case of the traditional Snellen chart, the optotypes have the appearance of block letters, and are intended to be seen and read as letters.
Wall-mounted Snellen charts are inexpensive and are sometimes used for rough assessment of vision, e.g.

A chart is used made up of capital letters, numbers, symbols or pictures which are larger at the top and smaller at the bottom of the chart.
The top line of the chart is of a size that could be read at a distance of 60 metres by a person with normal distance vision.
Of course, as you are only standing 3m from the printable chart, the top line should really be called "3/30" and the normal vision line "3/3", but things are confusing enough, so the chart is labelled using the more common numbers, even though it is designed to be viewed from 3m.

 How Visual Acuity Is Measured
The Tumbling E chart has the capital letter "E" facing in different directions and the person being tested must determine which direction the "E" is pointing, up, down, left, or right.
The Snellen fractions, 20/20, 20/30, etc., are measures of sharpness of sight.
For people who have worse than 20/400 vision, a different eye chart can be used that measures beyond 20/400 vision, or, for the most accurate measurements, a Low Vision Chart can be moved closer to the patient to measure the smallest letter that they can see at a lesser distance.

 Visual Acuity
The chart and the letters are named for a 19th-century Dutch ophthalmologist Hermann Snellen (1834—1908) who created them as a test of visual acuity.
That same person could stand 80 feet away from the chart and be able to decipher a 20/80 letter, or 200 feet away to be able to decipher a 20/200 letter.
Therefore, the goal of an eye doctor should be to position the eye chart at “optical infinity,” or the least distance at which there is no significant accommodation by the crystalline lenses of a patient’s eyes.

The simplicity of this chart allows it to be used on non-verbal patients, mentally challenged patients and patients who do not know (or are too young to know) the English alphabet.

 The Rayleigh Criterion
Visual acuity is typically measured with the use of a standard eye chart called the Snellen chart.
Where such units are used, normal vision came to be characterized by the fraction 20/20, which corresponded to being able to distinguish the letters on the fourth line up from the bottom at a distance of 20 feet.
The E on the chart has a standard height of 88 mm and the other letters are scaled accordingly.

Diagnostic Tests — Snellen Test for Visual Acuity
A Snellen test uses a chart with different sizes of letters or forms to evaluate your visual acuity-that is, the sharpness of your vision.
In an eye clinic, you may have a more sophisticated version of this test in which you look at the chart through different strengths of lenses (a little bit like looking through a telescope) so that your doctor can find the proper strength of glasses or contact lenses for you.
Sometimes the Snellen chart you see in an eye clinic is actually a reflection on a mirror from a projector in the back of the room.
