Packet sniffer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Packet sniffer (also known as network or protocol analyzer or Ethernet sniffer) is computer software (usually) or computer hardware that can intercept and log traffic passing over a digital network or part of a network.
A packet sniffer for a token ring network could detect that the token has been lost or the presence of too many tokens (verifying the protocol).
A packet sniffer could detect that messages are being sent to a network adapter; if the network adapter did not report receiving the messages then this would localize the failure to the adapter.

 computer-security/sniffers FAQ
One special sniffer, called Esniff.c, is very small, designed to work on Sunos, and only captures the first 300 bytes of all telnet, ftp, and rlogin sessions.
This posed a big problem when trying to find a sniffer to examine the network problems we were having, since I found that some sniffers that understood Ethernet II parse out some 802.3 traffic as bad packets, and vice versa.
One of these other sniffers in particular was reporting a large number of bad packets with src mac addresses of aa:aa:aa:aa:aa:aa but I don't see them at all using the MS product.

Distributed network sniffers have two part: Monitoring Probe which is a device deployed at various point of the network and a Consol which is a software package installed in the Network Operation Center (NOC) to centrally monitor all Probes.
The distributed network sniffers are typically deployed by large enterprises to monitor their network from a centralized location such as NOC.

Sniffers were originally developed by programmers around the world to be used as a tool for debugging network problems.
Sniffers capture the data being sent across the network in a very raw form, so in effect one is examining the packets traversing in the rawest form and using the information gathered by the analysis to detect or troubleshoot networking problems.
However, in case of Ethernet-based Sniffers, the Network Interface cards are set to a special state called the promiscuous mode to ensure that it receives all the packets within listening range of the listening system.

Introduced in 1988 by Network General Corp. (now Network Associates Inc.), the Sniffer was one of the first devices that let managers sit at their desks and take the pulse of the larger network.
The original sniffers read the message headers of data packets on the network, giving administrators details about the addresses of senders and receivers, file sizes and other low-level information about those packets, in addition to verifying transmission.
