There's not a lot known about Snowball I. All we know is that he died in an 'unexpected car accident', which is mentioned in the first episode of the show- "The Simpsons Roasting On An Open Fire".
Snowball I was soon replaced with a new cat not long after he died.
The new cat was Snowball II who was purchased apparently because he looked the same as Snowball I. We never actually see Snowball I alive in the show however.

I agree, Snowball II was funny at times, but really didn't have an impact of the show at all.
