The manor (meaning estate) of Snowshill dates all the way back to 821, and from then until 1539 it belonged to the Abbey of St Mary at Winchcombe.
It certainly was not beauty, as Snowshill Manor is filled with curious (but skilfully-made) items ranging from a Georgian iron- toothed man-trap to a West Indian slave collar and a game-keepers spring gun to an array of Japanese armour.
And although he handed over the entire Snowshill estate to the National Trust in 1952 (and died four years later), his home has been left exactly as it was except for the installation of some electricity.

Manor house - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A manor house or fortified manor-house is a country house, which has historically formed the centre of a manor (see Manorialism).
The term is primarily applied to relatively small country houses which belonged to gentry families, rather than to grand stately homes, particularly as a technical term for minor late medieval castles more intended for show than for defence.
In modern usage, the term manor or manor house is often used to mean simply a small or medium-sized country house, with no reference to age or to the historical sense of the term.

It was extended and reshaped in around 1600 but it was the additions by the Sambach family in the early part of the eighteenth century that from one viewpoint radically altered the aspect of the manor from an Elizabethan to a Georgian house.
