The function of the snubber network is to limit the rate of change of the voltage across the motor (out- put terminals of the L6203) when one of the DMOS devices is turned off.
This peak current flowing in the snubber is added to the load current when the device is turned on and the total peak current in the transistor is the sum of the snubber circuit current plus the load current.
The power dissipated in the snubber resistor is the sum of the dissipation during the turn-on and turn-off of the bridge.

Snubber for a hydraulic motor - Patent 5680913
The snubber of claim 6 wherein the first spring is positioned around the second end portion of the snubber stem between the stop means and the bore in the piston rod.
The snubber stem has a first operative position wherein the snubber is spaced from the end of the cylinder and a second operative position wherein the snubber stem is in contact with the end of the cylinder.
A flow restricting passage means in the snubber stem is provided for communicating the actuating chamber with the fluid passage in the end of the cylinder when the snubber stem is in the second operative position to dampen the end of stroke movement of the piston rod assembly.

Snubber - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Snubbers are frequently used with an inductive load where the sudden interruption of current flow would lead to a sharp rise in voltage across the device creating the interruption.
Snubbers are also often used to prevent arcing across the contacts of relays (and the subsequent welding/sticking of the contacts that can occur).
Placing the snubber diode in inverse parallel with the inductive load allows the current from the inductor to flow through the diode rather than through the switching element, dissipating the energy stored in the inductive load in the series resistance of the inductor and the (usually much smaller) resistance of the diode (over-voltage protection).

 U.S. Patent: 6016095 - Snubber for electric circuits - January 18, 2000
With this snubber, the number of cores to use, and the size of the individual cores are additional variables available to the designer to optimize the snubber.
Snubber circuits assembled of components with leads are less effective at high frequencies because the "lead inductance" becomes a significant impedance at high frequencies.
The inductance of the snubber 23 or 25 is reduced in proportion to the number of cores 27-27 used in parallel.

 Snubber
The “Snubber” was designed to give a little flexibility to your all-chain anchor rode.
The “Snubber” also will allow you to anchor and not have that little jerk when the wind changes direction.
Removing the “Snubber” is accomplished by pulling the rode (with the “Snubber” in place) to the anchor roller, then use a boat hook to grab the eye of the "Snubber" to release the chain.

Snubbers can also be classified as polarized or non-polarized depending on whether energy moves in or out of the snubber at either switching edge or at both.
In the clamp mode the purpose of the snubber is to clamp the voltage during turn-off at the drain of the MOSFET.
When the RCD snubber is used to control the rate of voltage rise at the MOSFET drain, the capacitor must be completely charged and discharged during each cycle to be able to control the rate-of-rise of the drain voltage.

BLE > Products > Snubber circuits
Overvoltages might be caused by the carrier storage effect of the power semiconductor or by the switching processes in the main current or in the current supply itself, for example by disconnecting the supply transformer.
Snubber network B6C-BE This snubber network is used for the reduction of commutation-overvoltages and especially as a restriction of overvoltages while switching off the power-transformer.
For rectifiers with thyristors the snubber networks are absolutely necessary and also for rectifiers with diodes if they are disconnected from the mains without load.

Information Notice No. 84-67: Recent Snubber Inservice Testing with High Failure Rates   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The cause was attributed to insufficient counter boring of the valve block end-cap for the hydraulic snubber, which inhibited the shuttle valve from properly closing the appropriate block port.
All three of the tested snubbers failed to meet the specified requirements in that the mechanical seals in the snubbers failed to hold hydraulic fluid at test loads of only 10 to 33 percent of the rated capacity of 2,400 kips.
Because not all snubbers are tested during each testing period (unless significant failure rates are detected), testing at rated load should not place an undue strain on the snubbers that could shorten their expected life.

 Power Supply Design: Snubber Design
Original Question: In clamp and snubber circuits for flybacks, to reduce voltage spikes at switch-off in the MOSFET drain, the common practice consists of a diode and a resistor paralleled to a capacitor.
None of us had ever heard the word snubber -- it was just wave shaping and EMI control, and we used as many lossy ferrite beads as we did lossy capacitors for this purpose (lossy to damp high-frequency ringing) and made our cores lossy above the switching frequency.
One way of looking at them is that the lossless snubber circuits can be viewed as miniature switching-mode powers supplies and much of the some thinking applies.
