Barney Google - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Barney Google and Snuffy Smith, originally Barney Google, is a long-running American comic strip.
In 1922, the strip took a huge turn in popularity with the addition of a race horse named "Spark Plug", a nag who seldom raced and was typically seen almost totally covered by his horse blanket.
Snuffy was so popular that his name was added to the strip's title in the late 1930s, and Barney Google himself virtually disappeared after the 1950s.

 Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Snuffy Smith
Snuffy Smith, one of Hootin' Holler's more ornery and sawed-off residents, was introduced on November 17, 1934.
Snuffy's propensity to shoot at those who displease him was toned down, as was the thickness of the various characters' hillbilly accents — while keeping many of DeBeck's pet phrases (e.g., "shif'less skonk" and "tetched in the haid"), he made their speech more accessible to mainstream Americans even while adding "Snuffyisms" of his own.
Snuffy appeared in comic books, issued sporadically from the 1930s to the '70s from five different publishers (David McKay, Dell, Toby Press, Gold Key and Charlton, in that order).
