Soap (TV series) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The show was a weekly, half-hour primetime comedy whose satirical bent was, in its day, practically without precedent for an American network programme, especially one whose format was similar to that of a daytime soap opera.
Soap is commonly cited as the first series to do this, but it was preceded by at least two other such shows: 1972's The Corner Bar and 1976's The Nancy Walker Show.
Soap was a parody of daytime soap operas presented in a half-hour primetime sitcom.

Television program - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Common TV program periods include regular broadcasts (like TV news), TV series (usually seasonal and ongoing with a duration of only a few episodes to many seasons), or TV miniseries which is an extended film, usually with a small pre-determined number of episodes and a set plot and timeline.
Older American television shows began with a title sequence, showed opening credits at the bottom of the screen during the beginning of the show, and included closing credits at the end of the show.
On television shows, directors are often interchangeable, mainly serving the dictates of the writer.

BBC - Comedy Guide - Soap
Soap was the creation of Susan Harris, who wanted to lampoon the daytime soap operas that proliferate on American television, not Dallas (a primetime series) but the really dross, schlock-operas like As The World Turns, All My Children, The Bold And The Beautiful and others of that woeful ilk.
Soap employed all the steamy ingredients of these unending serials but hilariously so, and in an ultra-fast paced, half-hour episodic format that usually, like its more serious counterparts, ended in the proverbial cliffhanger.
Soap ended on the cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers, with most of the characters put into terrible situations from which there was no chance of escape.

An attempt by the ABC to end the series in 1976 was averted when the show's cast rallied support from 40,000 viewers, and in 1977 concerted efforts were being made to revamp the series.
Despite these efforts the show was finally cancelled at the end of 1977 when a further fall in ratings and the ABC's desire to fund other dramatic initiatives spelt its demise.
