Soaps are mixtures of sodium or potassium salts of fatty acids which can be derived from oils or fats by reacting them with an alkali (like sodium or potassium hydroxide) at 80°-100 °C in the process known as saponification.
Soaps are useful and used primarily for cleansing because soap molecules attach readily to both non-polar molecules (such as grease or oil) and polar molecules (such as water).
According to Pliny the Elder, soap was invented by the ancient Gauls.

BBC - Comedy Guide - Soap
Soap was the creation of Susan Harris, who wanted to lampoon the daytime soap operas that proliferate on American television, not Dallas (a primetime series) but the really dross, schlock-operas like As The World Turns, All My Children, The Bold And The Beautiful and others of that woeful ilk.
Soap employed all the steamy ingredients of these unending serials but hilariously so, and in an ultra-fast paced, half-hour episodic format that usually, like its more serious counterparts, ended in the proverbial cliffhanger.
Soap ended on the cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers, with most of the characters put into terrible situations from which there was no chance of escape.

All those protesting prudes fought a futile battle: Soap was never naughty without purpose (indeed, the show possesses subtle integrity) and a large and loyal audience propelled it to even crazier heights in subsequent seasons.
It should be noted that the company issuing Soap on DVD, Columbia TriStar, also puts out Sanford and Son on DVD, and that a second season DVD episode of Sanford and Son, "Blood is thicker than Junk" incredibly edits out 2 and 1/2 minutes which appear on the syndicated version.
SOAP was - and remains - a series that breaks the rules and still works.

SOAP was one of the late 70's more controversial shows.
The temptation would be to say parody except that SOAP was smart enough to actually take its characters seriously despite the silly format.
After SOAP was cancelled there were two more crossovers, both made by Jessica and playing off her friendship with Benson.
