		Soap Lake in eastern Washington contains 25 to 125 grams per liter total dissolved solids depending on depth, has a pH of 10, and is known to support thriving populations of extremophilic microorganisms, specifically, haloalkaliphiles (bacteria that flourish in high salt and high pH environments).
		Soap Lake and other unique saline-alkaline environments of the Western U.S. may not have the degradative capacity to withstand the levels of contamination that are tolerable in many freshwater systems: a fact that seems to have been overlooked by regulatory agencies and many environmental groups.
		To determine impacts of non-point source contaminants on Soap Lake and haloalkaliphilic bacteria, we propose a study that crosses disciplinary boundaries to collect water and sediment samples to analyze for PAH and pesticides, and to quantify contaminant degradation rates and toxicity parameters for selected haloalkaliphilic Soap Lake bacterial isolates.

		University of Missouri-Rolla biologists studying the mineral-rich waters of Soap Lake in Washington state recently discovered a new genus of bacteria in the lake.
		The bacteria, “Nitrumincola lacisaponis,” was isolated from a sample of pink-tinted driftwood collected from the shore of Soap Lake by Dr. Melanie Mormile, an environmental microbiologist and associate professor of biological sciences at UMR.

		I live in Renton on the wet (er, WEST)side, but I lived in the Okanogan for many years and spent a good deal of time near Banks Lake, Soap Lake and Sun Lakes Park...........it never occurred to me that it would be good for my P to go swimming in Soap Lake.
		Just one thing, unless Soap Lake is fed by a hot spring, I think we better wait a few months......although I'm willing to try it, I don't want to freeze to death in the process!

		Now granted this might be a slight exaggeration but the Indians did build temporary hot houses, using basalt rocks on a fire, smearing the mud on all over their bodies and then pouring the lake water over themselves at regular intervals as a treatment for various skin disorders.
		Maybe not build the hot houses or fires but laying on the beach in 80 to 90 degree heat while covered in mud on either the East or West Beach is encouraged.
		The Chamber has a cabinet full of old letters along with documented proof Soap Lake had a sanitarium for Buerger's Disease (a form of gangrene) in the early 1920's and people who smeared the mud on their bodies and soaked in the water, were cured.
