		The British Soay was brought from England in 1990 for research purposes, kept as a closed flock and has documentation back to the UK.The the North American Soay was first developed in the mid 1980's by American exotic animal breeders and the Soay in its ancestry came from the 1974 importation from Scotland.
		Early breeding records for these sheep are non existent however, it is known that those on the west coast originated from a single Soay ram which was crossed with Mouflon, Barbados Blackbelly and Barbado then linebred with the resulting interbred offspring sold as Soay sheep.
		Because sheep registered with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust in England are reciprocal (interchangeable) with Soay in Britain we are also able to work closely with keepers in the UK to conserve this diverse prehistoric relic for future generations of farmers.

		Soays are the ancestors of all modern sheep breeds and have remained unchanged since the Stone Age by being isolated on the islands of Soay and Hirta, off the West coast of Scotland.
		The commercial sheep industry is therefore based on cross or half bred sheep, but in order to create these it is essential that the pure strains with all their special characteristics are maintained as separate breeds.
		A Cotswold sheep produces a fleece weighing an average of 5.5kg (12 lbs) of long lustrous wool each year and this wool is still made into traditional rugs or 'throws', dyed in the colours of our local Cotswold stone, lichens and mosses.
