It is led by Ni John Fru Ndi and receives significant support from the Anglophone regions of the western part of the country.

Reportedly, the Social Democratic Front (SDF) is “by far the largest and most significant opposition party [to the ruling Democratic Rally of the Cameroon People (Rassemblement Démocratique du Peuple Camerounais, RPDC)] in Cameroon” (DIS Feb 2001).
The SDF was formed in March 1990 in the town of Bamenda in western Cameroon.
According to the report, “Police detained SDF leader John Fru Ndi on several occasions to prevent him from reaching the city to join in the marches.” In January 2001, security forces dispersed an opposition demonstration that was protesting a new National Election Observatory that would supervise elections.

Sani Alhadji, former SDF chairman for the province, said the move stemmed from grievances such as "the non- respect of principles laid down in the manifesto and statutes of the SDF" and the "non-resolution of conflicts within the party".
The crisis in the SDF was heightened by a perception that its leader, John Fru Ndi, had violated resolutions adopted on 6 July by the party's national executive.
During a televised broadcast on 3 August, Fru Ndi said that despite the denigrating statements made by his former colleagues, the SDF was in fact a national party, having presented candidates for the legislative elections in 175 of the 180 constituencies.
