The new party's platform was written by three residents of the city (Richard Rigg, Herman Saltzman and Jacob Penner), and it has been estimated that nearly 20% of the SDPC's total membership lived in Winnipeg during the early 1910s.
In the following year's provincial election, the Dominion Labour Party, SPC and SDPC were able to present a united slate of candidates in Winnipeg, running a combined total of ten candidates for the city's ten seats (which were determined by preferential balloting).
John Queen was the sole Social Democrat on the ballot, and was declared elected to the legislature.

Social democracy is a political ideology emerging in the late 19th and early 20th centuries from supporters of Marxism who believed that the transition to a socialist society could be achieved through democratic evolutionary rather than revolutionary means.
As social democrats could be elected as list-free candidates while the party was outlawed, it had continued to be a growing force in the parliament, becoming the strongest party in 1912 (in imperial Germany, the parliamentary balance of forces had no influence on the formation of the cabinet).
Subsequently the Social Democratic Party and the newly founded Communist Party of Germany (which consisted mostly of SPD defectors) became bitter rivals, not least because of the legacy of the German Revolution.

Some members of the New Democratic Party have suggested the party should change its name to the "Social Democratic Party of Canada".

In 1924, the Canadian Labour Party was formed by a coalition of the Federated Labour Party, Workers Party of Canada (the legal face of the Communist Party of Canada, and local labour councils.

The Lefties and the Centrists are duking it out over control of the party's direction, with the Lefties complaining that the other side is selling out to the Republicans and the Centrists accusing the Left of being soft on terror.
If the Democratic Leadership Council (the Centrists) win control of guiding the party's direction, however, it will be even harder to convince other potential supporters that the party has not aligned itself with the Right and, quite frankly, I am not sure I would continue to support them.
