  Conservatism - Knowmore
Conservatism is a universal ideology or philosophy: conservatives consider their values to be valid for all persons, not just for themselves.
Conservatism is generally seen as an ideology, in the sense of a coherent and comprehensive political programme, based on a view of the world, and especially on specific values.
It is symbolically important precisely because it undermines the traditional social fabric, and the traditional values related to the family and marriage, and because it contravenes the widespread religious taboo on homosexuality.

Social conservatism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Social conservatism is a belief in traditional or natural law-based morality and social mores and the desire to preserve these in present day society, often through civil law or regulation.
Opponents of social conservatism argue that tradition is not necessarily a source of wisdom.
Proponents of social conservatism counter that many "modern" values are also vapid and corrupt, often pointing to the deterioration of the traditional nuclear family over the past century as a result of increased social acceptance of divorce, promiscuity, and homosexuality.

Social contract theory - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about Social contract theory
In Hobbes's version the position of free individuals ‘in a state of nature’ is presented as so dire that they contract to submit all except their actual lives to the will of the sovereign who thus exercises an almost absolute political authority.
In Rousseau's version the moral justification for the exercise of political power requires constant reaffirmation in the meeting of citizens to endorse the decisions and personnel of the government, as being consistent with the ‘general will’, that is with the persistence of equality and freedom in the society.
Social contract theory has survived a period of disrepute during the 1950s and early 1960s, and versions have been incorporated in the work of modern political theorists.

Canada’s major national media are smaller, more ideologically leftist, and more homogeneous than the U.S. media, and if they have agreed that socially conservative statements constitute an ipso facto campaign gaffe, then it is undeniable that a major obstacle has been established.
The upshot may be that social conservatives in Canada will slowly be purged from the Liberal Party and will ultimately survive in the Conservative Party only if they agree not to press their issues too forcefully, if at all.

There is no question that social conservatives generally and the religious right particularly have erred by framing their positions in exclusively negative terms that often appear to be pointing the finger at somebody else (you naughty homosexual, you fiendish woman considering an abortion, you filthy porno magazine reader, etc.).
The whole argument that social conservatism should be jettisoned because it is somehow not fashionable or likely to appeal to the youngest eligible voters is itself fundamentally anti-conservative.
My point is that as we recognize both the importance and potential appeal of economic conservatism even though the average voter is to the left of the Chicago or Austrian schools, the same case can be made for social conservatism when voters are to the left of the Christian Coalition.
