Social conservatism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Social conservatism is a belief in traditional or natural law-based morality and social mores and the desire to preserve these in present day society, often through civil law or regulation.
Proponents of social conservatism counter that many "modern" values are also vapid and corrupt, often pointing to the deterioration of the traditional nuclear family over the past century as a result of increased social acceptance of divorce, promiscuity, and homosexuality.
It may be, for instance, socially conservative to promote "traditional" marriage in a Protestant, mainstream Mormon, or Catholic community, but socially conservative to promote polygamy in a devoutly Muslim or fundamentalist Mormon community.

Conservatism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Conservatives who adhere to the natural often appeal to organic metaphors, such as the notion of society as a living organism.
Burkean conservatives value them for their own sake, because they are the result of long experience, but religious conservatives may use 'community values' as a euphemism for their own Christian values, or even for theonomy.
The Conservative Party in Britain was a staunch defender of the British Empire, and was responsible for initial brutal repression of African decolonisation.

The Great Divide: Ethical Divisions between Social Liberals and Social Conservatives Regarding Sexual Behavior
Generally speaking, the socially liberal are found on the center-left of the political spectrum, and include labor unions, women's and gay rights organizations, human-rights tribunals, much of the popular media, a good proportion of the "intelligentsia"," and, it may be argued, the judiciary.
Social conservatives tend to occupy the political right, and may be found in large numbers among those who adhere to organized religions, and many immigrant cultural groups.
The socially liberal appear to be in the ascendancy and have been remarkably successful in achieving many of their goals to "modernize" culture and society.

The Social Issue Conservatives Won’t Touch - David Oatney   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Social conservatives should be justly proud that they were able to mobilize even those who voted for John Kerry to vote to protect marriage, as exit polls showed in states such as Ohio on election night.
Conservatives have made all kinds of political noise over the last year about bringing the notion of gay marriage to an end, as well they should, but many conservatives have done little to try and stop the threat posed to the American family by an insanely high divorce rate.
The conservative movement holds as the cornerstone of its social theory that the traditional family is the building block of society as a whole, and that without the family, the larger society will collapse.

 Boston.com / News / Local / Social conservatives skeptical of Romney's viability in 2008
Though Romney is generally viewed as a conservative in the Massachusetts political climate, among activists who are crucial in GOP presidential politics, he is seen as a moderate on the two key subjects -- abortion and gay rights -- that galvanized voters on a moral issues agenda in the recently completed presidential campaign.
As for gay marriage, Romney's troubles with social conservatives stem from his support of a proposed state constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage but allow gay couples to join in civil unions that would provide many of the benefits and obligations of marriage.
Despite the concerns of social conservatives, many political analysts still give Romney a fair chance of emerging as a strong contender for the GOP nomination in 2008, if he chooses to run.

News Analysis: Social conservatives kept to the kiddie table
But while it’s clear that the economic conservatives (pro-tax cut and anti-regulation) and the national security conservatives (pleased with the war on terrorism) are sitting with the grown-ups in the West Wing, it’s also apparent that the social conservatives have been relegated to the kiddie table.
The problem, of course, is that the social conservatives are viewed as intolerant -- and that is among the worst things to be in American politics.
Social conservatives and their representatives in Washington, moreover, are “inclined to welcome any Republican,” particularly after eight years of Bill Clinton, says Schwartz.

Independent Gay Forum: Sullivan, Andrew. 'If It's Not a Crime to be Gay, Why Can't We Get Married?'
Moreover, the social transformation of the last decade cannot simply be gainsaid: A poll this week for USA Today found that 67% of the 18-29 age group believe that gay marriage would benefit society.
The majority of social conservatives oppose gay marriage; they oppose gay citizens serving their country in the military; they oppose gay citizens raising children; they oppose protecting gay citizens from workplace discrimination; they oppose including gays in hate-crime legislation, while including every other victimized group; they oppose civil unions; they oppose domestic partnerships; they oppose.
At times, the social conservative position is almost perversely inconsistent: Many oppose what they see as gay promiscuity; but even more strongly, they oppose any social measures that would encourage gay monogamy, such as marriage.

Social conservatives have reason to be optimistic
Nationally, socially conservative groups hit the ground running, interpreting President Bush's re-election as a mandate on social issues large and small.
Conservative activists supplied the winning margin for Bush in a narrow, second-term victory, and their contribution is well known among Bush's political advisers.
And unlike 2000, when about 4 million social conservatives stayed away from the polls because of their doubts about Bush's support, this time they flocked to polls in unprecedented numbers.

Conservatives recognize the reality that they very well could, and arguably will if history serves as a guide, ultimately lose both arguments in the courts.
While conservatives have been successful in limiting access to abortion, they have not stopped the performance of the procedure, a factor arguably driving the annual introduction of constitutional bans on abortion and the inclusion of a provision in the GOP's political platform for the Republican National Convention calling for a constitutional ban on the procedure.
As Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass, has pointed out, social conservatives failed in their argument against the legalization of interracial marriage citing a similar thesis and what many opponents categorized as the will of the people, while decrying the actions of judges ending racial-segregation laws around the country.

Some of the biggest proponents of social marketing are those who consider "positive" social change to be promoting the use of condoms and birth control or other issues that represent the agenda of social liberalism.
But social marketing is at heart a value-neutral discipline, and I daresay that we would do well to start studying these campaigns too, harnessing their lessons whenever possible in order to start moving our society closer toward our vision of what is the better life to live.
Social conservatives need to think more about how we can better reach and influence the people who need to hear our message, but will not receive it if they do not belong to a conservative Christian church or an Orthodox synagogue.

Ramesh Ponnuru on Social Security on National Review Online
On Social Security, Mueller's argument is that requiring workers to pay for the retirements of their parents' generation while also pre-funding their own retirements in personal accounts will, again, cause them to scant investments in human capital.
What has changed the politics of Social Security is, well, investment — the increasing enthusiasm of Americans for the kind of investment that Mueller says conservatives overvalue to their own political detriment.
Conservatives should think carefully about how economic policies can be made less hostile to families as well as to work: On this point, Mueller is right and the most doctrinaire supply-siders wrong.

But the Holy Week legislation passed by Congress was a last-minute and ultimately futile gesture, the latest in a long line of futile gestures aimed at social conservatives, including constitutional amendments pertaining to abortion, school prayer and marriage that have gone nowhere regardless of how many Republicans hold seats in the House or Senate.
