 CONFLICT AND SOCIAL DISTANCE: SAME AND OTHER;
SIMILARITY AND DIFFERENCE
But as social scientists trying to understand social interaction and conflict, our concern is not with what is manifested only in one person, with the unrecurring, unpatterned, unique person, but with the common parts of his qualities and quantities, with people in general.
The distances between people in the common space of all these components describe their likeness; the distances on these separate components, such as science or wealth, describe in which way two people are similar or different.
These are the distances in religion, in science, in ethics, and so on for the cultural components, and in statuses and class for the social components.

 Journal of Social Work Values and Ethics - Ethics Complaints in Social Work Practice: A Rural — Urban Comparison
Given that rural social workers appear to be at greater ethical risk than their counterparts in other communities in the areas of confidentiality and dual relationships, we might expect to see more reports of violations in these areas.
Social Workers become part of the community system and their actions and affiliations are important factors in how they are evaluated by the local community (Ginsberg, 2005).
Rural social workers must have a plan for dealing with dual relationships, and training on dual relationships must be a part of formal education for social workers practicing in rural areas.

 PERCEPTION AND SOCIAL DISTANCE
This excludes from social behavior, for example, kicking a rock (unless invested with meaning in a social context), scratching one's ear, or flagellating oneself as a consequence of some serious psychological disorder.
Remember that i and j are located on these components in i's dynamic field; therefore, the perceptual basis of these (vector) positions must be logically consistent with the nature of the components upon which i's psychological forces locate j.
Technically, if one had a matrix of perceived distance magnitudes of column objects (j's) from row percipients (i's) on a conservative-radical component, the matrix could not be reduced to this one component even though all magnitudes were originally generated from it.

The concept of "social distance," which Park derived from Simmel, seemed to him of much greater importance for an understanding of contemporary race relations.
Racial prejudice and social distance, Park argued forcefully, must not be confused with racial antagonism and conflict.
