AAUW Position on Women and Social Security   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The current Social Security system is more than just a retirement program; across the lifespan, it is one of the most successful anti-poverty programs in our nation’s history, providing benefits to many children, disabled workers, surviving spouses, and retirees.
According to the Social Security Administration, Social Security is the only source of retirement income for 30 percent of unmarried elderly women.
Social Security’s long- term solvency needs to be strengthened, not weakened through privatization.

 9. One’s Position in the Community. Post, Emily. 1922. Etiquette
In the same way, a woman’s social position that is built on sham, vanity, and selfishness, is like one of the buildings at an exposition; effective at first sight, but bound when slightly weather-beaten to show stucco and glue.
A bride whose family or family-in-law has social position has merely to take that which is hers by inheritance; but a stranger who comes to live in a new place, or one who has always lived in a community but unknown to society, have both to acquire a standing of their own.
Her social position is gained usually at a snail’s pace—nor should she do anything to hurry it.

BCCLA Position Paper: Social assistance, 1964
Social assistance is known by many synonyms public assistance, public welfare, relief, the dole, the welfare, and no doubt, others that have not come to our attention.
The provision of social assistance is selective and conditional, requiring that application be made by those seeking its benefits, and that eligibility for benefits (assessed, generally, in terms of need) be determined by those administering them.
But if social assistance programs are to remain at all (serving, as it were, the purpose of a safety net, which we may hope it will be necessary to use as seldom as possible), they must still be viewed as a means of accomplishing the same civilized purposes that sustain other types of welfare programs.

Sorokin - The Work - Social Stratification   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Social stratification, to Sorokin, means "the differentiation of a given popu- lation into hierarchically superposed classes." Such stratification, he held, is a permanent characteristic of any organized social group.
Exterior features of the architecture of social structures having been sketched, Sorokin proceeds to summarize their inner construction, to wit the character and disposition of the floors, the elevators, and the staircases that lead from one story to another; the ladders and accommodations for climbing up and going down from story to story.
Social mobility is understood as the transition of people from one social position to another.

 Social Networks & Migration
Social network data were collected from out-migrants also, who can be explicitly linked to their households and villages of origin.
Finally, investigators explore the consequences of migration for social networks, comparing the social position of recent and more established households within rural villages and also examining the effects of gains and losses in household membership.
And conversely, it uses social demography and the life course framework to understand aspects of the determinants of the shape of social networks.

Policy and Position Papers - Social Capital
Social capital is necessary if people, as strangers, are able to act collectively to address a crisis that might effect them (such as fire, flood, environmental degradation), or to advance interests of the community or to provide support and assistance to people who are disadvantaged.
Social capital is produced and reproduced by people engaging in these activities, generally (but not exclusively) through involvement in voluntary associations.
To be an effective generator of socially positive social capital, a non-profit association has to embody norms of tolerance towards non-members and should be outward-turning, encouraging members to confidently engage in activities with non-members within their wider society, as opposed to encouraging hostility and paranoia.

Social Position in Punch's Almanack and The Way We Love Now"
Throughout the novel, Trollope uses the Melmottes as the central figures in his exploration of social climbs and falls.
Melmotte's party elaborates on the theme of position and, in addition, allows the reader to see a more encompassing view of the societal pressure to respond to wealth and reputation as the symbols of the upper class.
She cared nothing for Melmotte's villainy, as regarded herself...But it would grieve her greatly to become known as one of an awkward squad of people who had driven to the door, and perhaps been admitted to some wretched gathering of wretched people, -- and not, after all, to have met the Emperor and the Prince.

The social classes in ancient Egypt
Thanks to tomb inscriptions we know how the deceased thought of their own social position, but only as part of their official relationship with the king: they were sole companions (Henku among many others), more honored by the king than any servant (Ptahshepses), pleasant to the heart of his majesty (Weni), etc.
They were generally pillars of social stability, provided local political cohesion to their regions in times of failing central power and from their midst often emerged new royal lines.
Thrift, hard work, initiative and luck were at times instrumental in achieving a higher social status: servants inherited their masters possessions when these died childless, a non-royal became Great Wife of the King and a foreigner became pharaoh in a coup d'état.

The Principles of the Social Doctrine of the Church
The Church’s social doctrine is an integral part of the Christian conception of life (MM 222); it is founded upon revelation and the natural law (RN 12; QA 11, 17; MM 219).
This type of socialization is not achieved by outright elimination of private ownership of the means of production, for the simple conversion of those means from private to public would only cause their monopolistic administration and disposition to change hands.
Socialization, then, is not the same as expropriation or nationalization; it simply puts into practice the principle of the primacy of labor (LE 14).

Rawls' Mature Theory of Social Justice: A Introduction for Students
The Original Position has often been compared to the "state of nature" or the pre-political condition of humanity, which was important in the philosophies of early modern social contract theorists.
In the social contract tradition there are three items to keep distinct: (1) the pre-political condition, (2) the political order established just as people were coming out of the pre-political condition, and (3) the actual (possibly flawed) order under which we now live.
First, they must be attached to offices and positions open to all under conditions of fair equality of opportunity; and second, they must be to the greatest benefit of the least advantaged members of society.

BioMed Central | Comments | Health inequality in adolescence. Does stratification occur by familial social background, ...
The authors concluded that “adolescents’ personal social position is a new indicator that should be included in the studies of health inequalities at that age group” [1].
When we use indicators of socioeconomic position, we attempt to estimate the position(s) the subjects have within the structure of society [2], and the choice of the indicator to be used should be related to the conceptual model underlying the connection between socioeconomic position, health damaging exposures, health protective resources, and health [2].
However, a common problem investigating the socioeconomic position of adolescents is the fact that the main domains of social position, hereby personal income, achieved education, occupation, and wealth are rather complicated to measure in a valid and reliable form among adolescents, if data are available at all.

BioMed Central | Abstract | Health inequality in adolescence. Does stratification occur by familial social background, ...
Two new sets of stratification indicators – family's material affluence and adolescent's personal social position- were compared with traditional indicators of familial social position based on parental occupation and education for their ability to detect health inequality among adolescents.
All three groups of indicators of social stratification showed inequality in health, but the strongest associations were observed with the adolescent's personal social position.
The direction of the inequality was as expected when using the traditional indicators or personal social position: adolescents from higher social positions were healthier than those from lower positions.
