The Socialist Equality Party of Sri Lanka learned on Tuesday that several SEP members in Kilinochchi, a region in the north of the island controlled by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), have been arrested by LTTE authorities.
The Sri Lankan SEP is attempting to gather more detailed information about the number and identity of those who have been seized, but it is already clear that the individuals involved are in serious danger.
I, Wije Dias, the general secretary of the Socialist Equality Party (SEP), the Sri Lankan section of the Fourth International, send this note of strong protest to the LTTE for arresting a number of our party members working in the area of Kilinochchi.

The origins of the SEP lie in the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) of the early 1960s.
As the leadership had so closely aligned themselves with Gerry Healy, when he decided that Wohlforth and Nancy Fields were no longer the right people to run the group and delcared that they were agents of the CIA they resigned from the group with little resistance.
In the midst of turmoil in Healy's group, by then called the Workers Revolutionary Party, the group renamed itself the Socialist Equality Party in 1995.

Many of the thousands of cases of "disappearances" reported in Sri Lanka since the early 1980s concern detainees alleged to have died under torture in police or army custody whose bodies were subsequently disposed of in secret [2].
Article 3 of the UN Convention against Torture, which provides that "[n]o State Party shall expel, return ("refouler") or extradite a person to another State where there are substantial grounds for believing that he would be in danger of being subjected to torture", has not been given effect in Sri Lanka.
When Amnesty International interviewed Anthonymala during a visit to Sri Lanka in 1996, she explained how she was held naked and taken for interrogation by the navy up to three times per day throughout the period of her stay at the Kankesanthurai navy camp.

Three months after its last hearing, the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission (HRC) has not fixed a date to recommence the inquiry into the disappearance of Socialist Equality Party (SEP) member Nadarajah Wimaleswaran and his friend, Sivanathan Mathivathanan, in northern Sri Lanka on March 22.
There is a large number of reported killings, abductions and disappearances which remain unresolved.” The government immediately dismissed Arbour’s suggestion that the UN Human Rights Commission send monitors or establish an office in Sri Lanka.
We again call on SEP supporters and WSWS readers to demand that Sri Lankan authorities conduct an urgent investigation to find Wimaleswaran and Mathivathanan and secure their safe release.

Sri Lanka is not a country which Marxist theory would indicate as likely to be a major center of strength of a movement such as Trotskyism, advocating a proletarian revolution.
The Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP), which for a quarter of a century was the Ceylonese affiliate of the Fourth International and was by the mid-1980s still the largest of those groups in Sri Lanka claiming to be Trotskyist, is the oldest surviving party in the island.
Their demand that a new party conference be called to consider the issue was ignored by the majority of the leadership [37].

Along with its sister parties of the International Committee of the Fourth International, the SEP is aiming to develop a global counter-offensive against imperialism, uniting the working masses in Sri Lanka with their class brothers and sisters in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the advanced capitalist countries.
At the same time, the party has made clear that the only genuinely progressive means of ending the catastrophic 20-year civil war is through the development of an independent political movement of the working class and rural masses—whether Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim or Christian—for the Socialist United States of Sri Lanka and Eelam.

Labor party work was the main preoccupation of the ICFI as a whole, at the time a larger organization headed in England by Gerry Healy.
David North, a leader of this tendency in the U.S. then and now, attributed the split to "longstanding political rot in the leadership." By the leadership, he meant Healy and his associates, who North felt were dragging the ICFI in a non-revolutionary direction.
Hansen was a respected leader in the Socialist Workers Party (SWP), the first Trotskyist party in the U.S. The Workers League also financed a decade-long court battle in which former SWP member Alan Gelfand asked a judge to "fire" one whole committee of national SWP leaders, claiming they were FBI or Kremlin agents.

The International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI) is the leadership of the world socialist movement, the Fourth International founded by Leon Trotsky in 1938.
At that time Eduard Berstein, then a leading figure in the SPD, argued that capitalism was not leading to collapse or social disaster and could be gradually reformed, rather than replaced by an insurrectionary movement of the working class.
Inasmuch as this failure has been demonstrated over several decades on an international scale, one is led inescapably to search for its objective causes -- both in the socio-economic environment within which the trade unions now exist and, even more fundamentally, in the essential nature of the trade unions themselves.

And while you take great pains to distinguish this stand from the rest of Sri Lanka's reactionary left movements, your underlying logic is essentially the same.
Rather, your party's ideas have to be seen in terms of the material impact they have on a given situation - that is how their objective character is determined.
And what I think your party has to consider is whether what you are saying at this time and in this place is a help or hinderance to the nation al liberation of a traumatised and much-abused people who are currently under the heel of foreign military occupation - by yours and my nation.
