The Socialist Party USA (SP USA) is one of the heirs to the Socialist Party of America of Eugene V. Debs and Norman Thomas.
The Socialist Party USA was one of three organizations to emerge from a split of the Socialist Party of America in 1972-1973.
The party specifically rejects Leninist models of organization and the practices commonly called "democratic centralism", meaning that SP members are often free to disagree publicly with party policy.

The 1904 Convention of the Socialist Party of America was attended by 175 delegates representing 33 states and territories.
A forthcoming Congress of the Socialist and Labor International was noted, to be held May 21, 1923, but the NEC determined that it was unable to send a delegate due to financial considerations—but that the elected representatives of the party, Morris Hillquit and Victor Berger, would nonetheless be attending the gathering at their own expense.
The 1924 Convention of the Socialist Party was held in Cleveland immediately after the closing of the First Convention of the Conference for Progressive Political Action in that city.

If the Labor Party is unable to maintain an independent working class position in times of war, then it wouldn't be able to withstand the enormous pressures to compromise with big business if it were to get candidates elected to office.
Labor leaders have historically only supported independent workers' parties when they absolutely had to, once it became so popular among union members that labor leaders would be voted out if they didn't jump on the bandwagon.
While the space has been opening up for a workers' party, the experience of the LP demonstrates that it is not enough to just sit back and wait for people to come flocking to the party.

In 1919, there was a major split in the Party, when those who accepted the demand for unconditional allegiance to the Third (Communist) International formed the Communist Party (composed mostly of the foreign-language federations) and the Communist Labor Party (led by John Reed).
The Socialist Party was down to about 2,000 members, and had more or less withdrawn from electoral action in the face of the increasingly restrictive ballot-access laws passed by state legislatures around the country.
Since this meant the Socialist Party was completely isolated from the anti-war movement, as well as from the so-called "New Left," it was virtually the only left party in the country that did not experience a major upsurge in membership during this period.

Both parties have supported the invasion and occupation of Iraq.  It was Clinton who signed NAFTA and gutted the social safety net.  Both parties support the Taft-Hartley Act, which has hobbled the labor movement for decades.
The South Carolina Labor Party's (SCLP) recent campaign to gain ballot access in that state is an encouraging sign (they collected 16,500 signatures - far more than the 10,000 required).
But beyond this, we must encourage the Labor Party to fight on the electoral front beyond South Carolina.  Workers in the rest of the country need a party through which to express their interests as well.
