The "socialist industrial union" is conceived as an association of labor which organizes much as trade unions do, however it unites workers of all occupations as the integral departments of a single union of the entire working class.
Of all organizations still in existence today, throughout the world, the Socialist Labor Party of America is the one which is the most direct extension of the International Working Men's Association (the IWMA, or 'the International'), which was founded by Karl Marx and his collaborators in 1864.
De Leon here described the political party as the "sword" and the industrial union as the "shield" of labor, a viewpoint which was to be exactly reversed by De Leon in 1904.

It was formed in 1901 by a merger between the Social Democratic Party, formed three years earlier by veterans of the Pullman Strike of the American Railway Union, and a wing of the older Socialist Labor Party of America.
The party was then buttressed by the mass entry of the American followers of Leon Trotsky from the U.S Workers Party in keeping with the so-called French Turn, by which Trotskyists recruited to their revolutionary perspectives.
By the late 1960s the most powerful figures in the Socialist Party of America were Max Shachtman and Michael Harrington, who agreed upon a parallel strategy of maintaining the Socialist Party as an independent third party that fielded its own candidates, and acting as a pressure group within the Democratic Party.

From prison, Debs ran for president on the Socialist Party of America ticket in 1920 and won 3.5 percent of the vote.
