Socialist Labour Party (UK) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The party was formed as a left-wing splinter in reaction to Tony Blair's re-positioning of the British Labour Party to the centre ground of politics.
The party seems to be on the wane electorally, garnering fewer votes than it used to, although it did manage to get its highest percentage share in any individual parliamentary constituency at the 2005 general election when they took 14.2% of the votes cast in Glasgow North East.
However, the absence of a Labour Party candidate in Glasgow North East (following the convention that the main parties do not stand against a sitting Speaker of the House of Commons) where Michael Martin was re-standing, was a probably a major factor in achieving 14.2% of the vote.

On Scargill's call for a Socialist Labour Party
It was stressed that the rapid right wing political degeneration of the Labour Party and the decision of its leader, Tony Blair, to ditch the 77 year old reformist Clause IV from its constitution could not be approached simply from the standpoint of the actions of "bad individuals".
The reformist Labour Party and trade union organisations were built by the working class at the beginning of the century to fight for and defend these hard won social gains from the capitalist class.
In fact the ILP was not isolated because of its split from the Labour Party, but because it rejected the call to join the Left Opposition and the Fourth International and orient to the working class on the international socialist perspective and a revolutionary socialist programme in a struggle against social democracy and Stalinism.

The Socialist Labour Party   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
For the SLP was a reaction against the bourgeoisification of the Labour Party, against the formal removal from the Labour Party constitution of Clause IV, the LP’s pretence to stand for an alternative to capitalism.
They were supportive of the SLP project right from the very beginning, and their weekly press gave it considerable and friendly coverage, correctly seeing in the party’s formation an opportunity to expand the influence of revolutionary Marxism in the working class, a potential stepping stone for the creation of a revolutionary party.
Socialist Labour sees that the capitalist state exists to keep the ruling class in power, not as something to be used by either class.

The Socialist Labour Party   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
The Clause IV result indicated that for most Labour Party members the replacement of capitalism with socialism has ceased to be a consideration of immediate relevance and their political horizons extend no further then the removal of the Tories and the election of a Labour government.
The decision to form the Socialist Labour Party is not merely an act of political irresponsibility; beneath Scargill’s leftist rhetoric and notwithstanding his subjective militancy, it is an act of political cowardice.
For the SLP to call on Labour Party members and trade unionists to abandon the struggle against Blair inside the party, to argue that the unions should assist Blair by voluntarily disaffiliating from Labour – this would be the height of political idiocy.

 02 Socialist Labour Party Congress
The Socialist Labour Party (SLP) held its third (that is, if we exclude the Special Congress held in Manchester, 14 November 1998) Congress on the weekend of 6/7 November 1999 in London’s Conway Hall.
Apart from Party delegates, the Conference Hall was graced by the presence of fraternal delegates from the DPRK, Cuba, France, Ireland and Sweden.
Alain Simon, a member of the Communist Party of France and Secretary General of the International Energy and Miners’ Organisation conveyed greetings from the French trade unions, praised the SLP for its opposition to the imperialist war against Yugoslavia, its opposition to anti-trade union legislation and for its support for the Cuban Revolution.

The emergence of the Socialist Labour Party
An SLP government would be confronted with the question of state power; it would be confronted with the question of smashing the bourgeois state machine (the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie) and putting in its place the dictatorship of the proletariat.
Since the SLP is likely to adversely affect the Labour Party, especially in electoral terms, it is not surprising that it has been attacked by most Trotskyist and revisionist organisations, the 'left' appendages of social democracy whose main concern continues to be the electoral interests of the Labour Party.
Socialist Outlook issued blood-curdling threats and promised to fight to the death against Blair's attempt allegedly to cause "a profound shift in the politics of the Labour Party" by reversing "the working-class nature of the Labour Party" and thus "change its identity".

Your View 21 - Arthur Scargill and the end of a fantasy
Along with Militant Labour - precursor of the Socialist Party in England and Wales - we in the CPGB organised a series of successful public meetings in early 1996 putting the case for a Socialist Labour Party.
It was necessary to declare the party in existence before its launch in order to contest the by-election in Hemsworth, Yorkshire on February 1 (the SLP candidate, Brenda Nixon, polled 5.4%, saving her deposit).
However, a good proportion of the 2,000-plus SLP membership had been active in the campaign and the results (just under two percent where the SLP stood) were generally held to be reasonable in view of the anti-Tory Labour landslide.

A LEFT CRITIQUE OF THE SOCIALIST LABOUR PARTY
However, whether or not a party is really a political party of the workers does not depend solely upon a membership of workers but also upon the men that lead it, and the content of its actions and its political tactics.
Regarded from this, the only correct, point of view, the Labour Party is a thoroughly bourgeois party because, although made up of workers, it is led by reactionaries, and the worst kind of reactionaries at that, who act in the spirit of the bourgeoisie.
Labour's social base amongst the more affluent sections of the working class, and in certain sections of the middle class, would in itself be far too narrow an electoral base to enable it to become a significant parliamentary force in the post-war world.

Marxist Bulletin: From Opportunity to Obstacle
The December conference of the Socialist Labour Party was the culmination of a good deal of effort by the leadership of the party, centred around Arthur Scargill, to destroy the revolutionary potential that this highly contradictory left-wing split from Labour showed in its early months.
Thus the SLP was an organisation with a central political contradiction right from the start, and connected to that, with an organisational contradiction as well, that was ultimately to lead to the debacle of the conference in December.

The victory of the socialist revolution is inconceivable without the existence of a party that unites the most militant and determined fighters into a single disciplined movement capable of providing effective leadership for all those who suffer under the existing capitalist state.
A healthy mass working class socialist party can only be created on the basis of a high degree of internal democracy, a lively culture of political discussion and the capacity to change its policy as a result of that discussion.

In this sense the SLP, inasmuch as it influences anybody, promotes dangerous reactionary nonsense in suggesting that capitalism could be overthrown, because that is what the implementation of their election manifesto would require, by electing some SLP MP's.
Luckily the SLP is a rapidly dwindling force which has only been able to stand its 116 candidates due to a significant injection of outside funds.
