The original Socialist Party had its roots in the Congress Socialist Party (CSP), the socialist caucus of the Indian National Congress, which fused in 1948 with the Bolshevik-Leninist Party of India, Ceylon and Burma (BLPI).
A third Socialist Party was formed in 1972 through the reunion of the Praja Socialist Party with the Samyukta Socialist Party led by George Fernandes.

Kripalani served in the interim Government of India (1946-1947) and served in the Constituent Assembly of India.
Prominent in the party, with Gandhiji's support - and in spite of being ideologically at odds with both the right-wing Sardar Patel and the Fabian Socialist Pandit Nehru - he was elected Congress President for the crucial years around Indian Independence in 1947.
This party subsequently merged with the Socialist Party of India to form the Praja Socialist Party.

Subsequently representatives of the Burma Socialist Party, the Socialist Party of India and the Partai Sosialis Indonesia met at a preliminary meeting in Rangoon in March 1952 where they decided to convene a conference of Asian socialist parties in Rangoon in January 1953 and appointed a preparatory committee for the organisation of the conference.

 Horrors of privatization
On July 16, 77 children were killed in a fire in Kumbakonam, in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, when the thatched roof of Sri Krishna private school caught on fire and quickly spread to the rest of the building.
This has been the direct result of economic restructuring programs initiated by the Congress Party at the beginning of the 1990s, and then extended by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The consequences have been that the public education system is so rundown in most places that parents are forced to send their children to a growing number of private schools that are unregulated, overcrowded and corrupt.
