The original leadership of the SWM (Ireland) left in sympathy with a small tendency in Britain and formed the Irish Workers Group, now Workers Power Ireland, which is now a tiny part of the League for the Fifth International.
Unlike most other socialist groups, the SWM supported the revolutions against what it saw as 'State Capitalist' dictatorships- that regimes such as the Soviet Union were not socialist but another form of capitalism, directed not by corporations but by a Stalinist bureaucracy using the state.
It should not be confused with the Socialist Party (Ireland), the Irish Republican Socialist Party or the Workers Party (Ireland).

On the side of education the party took the initiative in establishing the James Connolly Labour College, a federation of the Labour Movement for the purpose of Marxian education within the movement.

The Irish Socialist Republican Party was founded in May 1896 at a meeting in a public house in Thomas Street, Dublin, by a few people whom James Connolly was able to convince of his proposition that the two currents of revolutionary thought in Ireland, national liberation and socialism, were not antagonistic but complementary.
Party members involved in that struggle did a wonderful job; the publication of the full story of those events is long overdue.
The Communist Party was the organiser of the Irish Section of the 15th International Brigade.

A generally good member like Shane leaves the party, because of backstabbing and a lack of democracy, and the SP launch a muddy attack on his past and what he is up to now to divert attention from their despotic internal structure.

In an imperial country, the criterion of a good socialist was his willingness to stand up against national prejudices for the brotherhood of man.
