Societas Rosicruciana - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Societas Rosicruciana is a name used by a number of Rosicrucian groups.
This group has formed two offshoots with which it is "in amity", the Societas Rosicruciana in Scotia in Scotland and the Societas Rosicruciana in Civitatis Foederatibus founded in 1880 in the United States under a charter from the Scottish group.
In 1909, Dr. George Winslow Plummer (1876-1944) founded the Societas Rosicruciana in America, apparently seceding from the SRICF; this group appears not to retain the requirement that members be Christian Master Masons.

Hockley inherited a large library of rare alchemical works from Sigismund Bacstrom, a Scot who founded a branch of the Societas Rosae Crucis in Scotland after being initiated into the group on the French Island of Mauritius.
Wescott, who had inherited Hockley's alchemical library and obtained MacKenzie's cypher manuscript from his widow, collaborated with Woodman and ardent occultist Samuel Mathers in 1887 to use the notes as a basis for a new group dedicated to practical magick, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

However, the S.R.I.A. could not and would not be re-organized as a school for Qabalistic and occult study.
The grade structure of the Golden Dawn paralleled that of the S.R.I.A., with the exception of the highest degree of Ipsissimus, which was reserved for Jesus in the mythology of the S.R.I.A. Westcott stressed the essential nature of having ten grades, for they represent the ten Sephiroth of the Qabalistic Tree of Life.
The SRIA was a scholarly, ceremonial association open only to Master Masons (i.e., Masons of the third degree.) Mathers and Wescott were fellow-Masons in this group with Woodman, thus providing the "missing link" to the evolution of the Order of the Golden Dawn.

It was this Shift in Emphasis of the Theosophical Society, the ‘theory only’ approach of Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia and a desire to further the pioneering research of Eliphas Levi that lead the Co-founder of the Golden Dawn to come together.
