Society for Psychical Research - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Society for Psychical Research (SPR) was founded in 1882 by three dons of Trinity College, Cambridge, Edmund Gurney, Frederic William Henry Myers, and Henry Sidgwick, because of their interest in spiritualism.
Research was initially aimed at six areas: telepathy, mesmerism and similar phenomena, mediums, apparitions, physical phenomena associated with séances and, finally, the history of all these phenomena.
The Society was wracked by internal strife, a large part of the membership (the Spiritists) leaving as early as 1887 in opposition to the approach taken by the so-called intellectuals.

 American Society for Psychical Research
Through its research and educational programs, the ASPR supports the efforts of both laypersons and professionals to use the study of psychical research to expand andimprove the full understanding of human nature and the broad scope of human abilities.
The American Society for Psychical Research, first organized in 1885 with astronomer Simon Newcomb as president, later became a branch of the British Society for Psychical Research, founded in 1882,and functionned in Boston under the guidance of Richard Hodgson, formely of Cambridge University, until his death in 1905.
The close relationship between psychic phenomena and important scientific and philosophical issues is evidenced by the fact that the investigation of such phenomena has enlisted the interest and active participation of a number of outstanding scientists and philosophers.

JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY FOR PSYCHICAL RESEARCH
Back in the very first Proceedings of our Society in 1882, Barrett, Gurney and Myers said that if the phenomena they were investigating were real they would "necessitate a modification of that general view of the relation of mind to matter to which modern science has long been gravitating" (Barrett et al., 1882, p.34).
It was around then, before the founding of psychical research, and probably had quite a strong influence on the origins of psychical research.
Psychical research is therefore claiming something which to me just does not fit.

The SPR is known today as the first large organization dedicated to the study of the paranormal, using scientific techniques to gather evidence.
The early society was plagued with problems caused by the controversy of Spiritualism and by smear campaigns launched by scientists who were angry the group was started in the first place.
A group dedicated to the research of the paranormal cannot be aligned with only the skeptics nor with the “true believers”, but must remain grounded in the middle, gathering evidence which is based on facts and not pre-conceived notions.

 PARAPSYCHOLOGY AND SURVIVAL AFTER DEATH - PSYCHICAL RESEARCH - LIFE-AFTER-DEATH - SURVIVAL - HEREAFTER - APPARITIONS - ...
When the Society for Psychical Research (S.P.R.) was founded in 1882 research into phenomena and experiences suggesting personal survival of man after death took a high priority.
Investigators of the S.P.R. became so influenced by these attacks and were so eager to find favour in the eyes of their antagonists that they began to take over their condemning attitude.
One of the reasons being given is that the advancement of rationalized society entails the marginalization or elimination of its adversary, the paranormal.

William James was so impressed with the early SPR, in fact, that he helped found an american version of the SPR in 1884-1885 (there is some disagreement in my sources as to the exact year) with the name of the American Society for Psychical Research (ASPR).
By 1900, the SPR had produced over 11,000 pages of reports and articles, as well as a book that was written and published by members: Phantasms of the Living, by Gurney, Myers, and Frank Podmore (another founding member of the SPR), which was published in 1886 and dealt with reports of hallucinations, apparitions, and telepathy.
Eleanor Sidgwick became president of the SPR in 1908-1909, was appointed honorary secretary from 1910-1931, and finally, in 1932, was appointed president d'honneur in 1932.
