The Society of Antiquaries of London is a learned society, based in the United Kingdom, concerned with "the encouragement, advancement and furtherance of the study and knowledge of the antiquities and history of this and other countries".
An antiquary was a person interested in the study of the past, particularly the physical traces of the past.
Members of the Society, known as Fellows (FSA), are elected by existing members of the Society, and Fellowship is regarded as a sign of recognition as an established scholar.

The Society of Antiquaries of London was formed in the 18th century to promote the study of antiquities.
In 1707 a number of English antiquaries began to hold regular meetings for the discussion of their hobby and in 1717 the Society of Antiquaries was formally reconstituted, finally receiving a charter from King George II in 1751.
The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland was founded in 1780, and had the management of a large national antiquarian museum in Edinburgh.

This date is supported by p.74 of Hume, which indicates that the antecedents of this society were found in meetings that Archibishop Parker began in 1572, but which eventually became secret because of the fear of persecution by King James I (who reigned in England from 1603 to 1625).
This location is supported by Hume (at least from 1751), where Hume indicates on p.75 that the name given the Society by George II on its incorporation in 1751 was Society of Antiquaries of London.

The Society of Antiquaries, which holds its meetings on the same floor as the Royal Society, and on the same evenings, was originally founded in the year 1572, by the learned Archbishop Parker, Sir Robert Cotton, Camden, Stowe and others.
Various interesting volumes and prints, in illustration of English antiquities, have been published by this society, independently of eighteen volumes of the "Archaeologia," which is a collection of the most interesting papers read at the meetings.
The SOCIETY OF ANTIQUARIANS OF LONDON, Somerset House, was formed into a society in 1717, obtained a charter in 1751, and took possession of their present apartments in 1781.

The Spalding Gentlemen’s Society, one of the oldest learned Societies in the kingdom, and the earliest provincial association for the encouragement of archaeology, was founded by Maurice Johnson, (1688-1755), ‘The Antiquary’, of Ayscoughfee Hall, Spalding.
In 1712, it was decided to place the meetings on a more permanent footing, and proposals were issued for the establishing of a ‘Society of Gentlemen, for the supporting of mutual benevolence, and their improvement in the liberal sciences and in polite learning’.
Francis, Duke of Buccleuch, (1695-1751), Lord of the Manor of Spalding-cum-Membris, became Patron of the Society in 1732.

The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland is an archaeological learned society formed for the purpose of studying the history of Scotland.
The Society was established in 1780, incorporated in 1783 and has an international membership of around 3500 Fellows and 25 Honorary Fellows.
Election to the Fellowship is not based on professional standing (as in the Society of Antiquaries of London), but rather on interest in historical studies.
