Society of St. Pius X - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Society was established under Catholic canon law in the provisional form of a pia unio, and the status was withdrawn in 1975.
The SSPX (which is sometimes referred to simply as "SSPX", without the definite article) was born out of conservative opposition to the changes in Catholic teaching and practice that followed the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965).
The SSPX leadership responded with distrust, saying that Castrillón was vague on how this structure would be implemented and supported, and citing what they regarded as objectionable conduct on the Vatican's part at the time of the 1988 consecrations and in relation to the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter.

What is the Society of Saint Pius X? The Society of Saint Pius X is a priestly fraternity, founded in 1969 by His Grace Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre to provide training for the Catholic priesthood without any trace of modernist doctrine, morals or worship.
The Society of St Pius X holds to those teachings that the Church has taught for nearly two thousand years, and it does so regardless of the favour or disfavour it receives from the present churchmen in Rome.
Dismayed by the implications of Vatican II for the Church, he founded the Priestly Society of Saint Pius X and was the first Superior General between 1970 and 1982.

Saint Paul tells us in his Epistle to the Hebrews that a priest is a man taken from among men on behalf of men and appointed for the things pertaining to God.
This latter question (that is, of the irregular status of the major clerics of the Society of Saint Pius X ordained after June, 1988) was one of the items treated by the recent document from the Pontifical Commission for the interpretation of Legislative Texts.
The moral approval, or blessing, of the Society was sought in the beginning for our work, but it could not have been, even in the most favorable of circumstances the substitute for an ecclesiastical approval.

An Interview with Bishop Richard Williamson of the Society of Saint Pius X   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The SSPX has never been in schism because it has never rejected the right of the Church authorities in Rome to govern the Church, it has only said that certain of the orders given by those authorities cannot be obeyed because they are contrary to the good of the Church.
SSPX, its founder Marcel, its illicitly consecrated bishops, its ilicitly ordained priests and its adherents were not excommunicated for disagreeing with Vatican II, or for celebrating Tridentine Masses, or for any of the matters of liturgical taste that impel them to rebellion.
Anyone even remotely familiar with the history of the SSPX and the writings of many (if not most) of its prominent adherents knows that their arrogant assumption of the right to pass judgment upon the Holy See and the rest of the church is part of the culture of the society.

That the SSPX was canonically constituted according to the Pio-Benedictine Code is generally accepted, however, some ambiguity exists as to the object of their establishment.  For if one looks at the decree canonically establishing the SSPX, one sees that Bishop Charrière is cautious in his approval of the SSPX, decreeing as follows:
Yet regardless of whether the SSPX was canonically erected as a pious association of the faithful in accordance with c*.

From what they say, it is clear that the Society and its followers are definitely not schismatic, nor excommunicated; that their priests are validly ordained priests; the sacraments they bestow are valid sacraments; and that anyone can fulfill their Sunday obligation by attending a Society of Saint Pius X Mass.
In the case of the Society of Saint Pius X lay people or the priests, the Vatican never declared any priest or lay person to have become a schismatic." Therefore the priests and faithful are not excommunicated.
Of course the Mass and Sacraments administered by the priests of the Society are valid.

Since 1991, from the lifetime of Mgr Lefebvre, the Society of Saint Pius X has arrogated over its members (and potentially over all Catholics) the “power to bind and to unbind”, usurping the exclusive powers of the Holy See.
In the first part certain internal documents of the Society of Saint Pius X are published (documents which are therefore unavailable to the public and even to the faithful of the Society); these concern the creation, in 1991, of a canonical Commission invested with vast powers of jurisdiction, the Canonical Commission of Saint Charles Borromeo.
According to the texts in question, the faithful of the Society of Saint Pius X, religious and priests affiliated with it, and potentially all Catholics, are “subject” to these tribunals of which they have no knowledge and to their judges.

Overlooking Bishop Fiorenza’s John Kerry-like gaffe in terming the Society of Saint Pius X the “St. Society of St. Paul X,” the letter reproduced above makes the erroneous assertion that the Society of Saint Pius X is in schism and that they are not in communion with the Holy Father.
Whether or not the specific “schismatic” acts Father Zigrang is alleged to have committed by being associated with the Society of Saint Pius X at Queen of Angels Church in Dickinson, Texas, were outlined to Cardinal Hoyos by Bishop Fiorenza remains to be seen.

He also reported the suggestion of a cardinal who remarked that in a town in the Middle-East where he had been a missionary the Mass is celebrated in a dozen different rites.
