The spread of the society was watched with growing alarm by the authorities and it was banned in 1793 following the declaration of war on France.
Although most of the United Irish leadership could not directly participate in the fighting, tens of thousands of followers took to the field and the resulting rebellion was severely hampered by the lack of leadership.
The failure of Robert Emmett's rebellion in 1803 triggered the effective collapse of the Society of United Irishmen and the first half of 19th century saw sectarianism replace separatism as the touchstone for political unrest in Ireland.

 George Mealmaker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Despite Mealmaker admitting that it was he, and not Palmer who had written the pamphlet the court found Palmer guilty and sentenced him to 14 years transportation.
Mealmaker continued his radical activities and became involved in the Society of the United Scotsmen.
He continued to write treatises critical of the government and in 1797 he wrote The Moral and Political Catechism of Man for which he was arrested.

 Trenton Historical Society, New Jersey
Shortly after the formation of the society, the members participated in the exercises attendant upon the laying of the cornerstone of the Trenton Battle Monument, and this was the first of many historic and patriotic enterprises in which the society has been interested.
It is the aim of the society to preserve all buildings, relics and mementos of early American life, and to stimulate a healthful interest in Colonial affairs, and a spirit of true patriotism and love of country.
This was a society founded in May 1902 among members of the Knights of Malta, and was intended originally as a social branch of this order.

The United Irishmen (UI) had been formed in 1791 but the failure of their constitutional approaches led to their adoption of an openly revolutionary programme in 1795.
Societies of United Scotsmen (US) had existed since the early 1790s but after being invited to re-organise along Irish lines their philosophy became overtly revolutionary and their strategy insurrectionary.
The United Journeymen Shoemakers of Edinburgh had been formed to negotiate higher wages and support the unemployed, but when they tried to strike for higher wages in 1798 the authorities stepped in and tried them for ‘combination’.

That is why federalism in the United States is more than a political device for dividing and sharing power among the state and federal governments but, rather, the form of the American polity in the eighteenth century sense of the term, that is to say, the principle that informs every aspect of the polity.
Since every ship that ventured forth on the ocean was, in effect, leaving civil society for a state of nature, every voyage had to be based upon a prior compact among all participants which would determine the political arrangements that would prevail for that voyage and the distribution of the economic benefits that would result.
In a covenanted society the state itself is hardly more than an association, writ large and endowed with exceptional powers but still an association with limited means and ends.
