Chapter 7 - Socioeconomic Status of Enlisted Accessions   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
While the socioeconomic status of recruits is slightly lower than the general population, today's recruits have higher levels of education, measured aptitudes, and reading skills than their civilian counterparts.
In general, socioeconomic status is considered as an indicator of economic and social position.
The socioeconomic index (SEI), derived from predicted prestige scores based on levels of income and education within occupations, is one means of defining socioeconomic status.

Well-Being in Klamath: Executive Summary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Socioeconomic scores are reported on a seven-point scale with a one indicating very low socioeconomic status and a seven indicating very high socioeconomic status.
Socioeconomic status and capacity are also related, to a limited degree, to other measures such as population density, population size, and geographic isolation.
Both socioeconomic status and capacity in the Klamath region tend to decrease as the relative isolation--as measured by several spatial factors such as distance from major highways and cities and density of public land--of aggregation population increases, although these relationships vary at a subregional level.

 Socioeconomic Status - Adoption Encyclopedia
Many adopted people are adopted from families with a lower socioeconomic status than the families who adopt them; for example, the birthparents may be both blue collar and lower middle-class people whereas the adoptive family is middle class or even upper class.
Not all birthparents are lower middle class, however, and not all adoptive parents wear "white collars." Many foster parents opt to adopt their foster children, and the average foster parent is a working-class person.
Studies indicate that socioeconomic status and criminality of adopted individuals are linked inversely: the higher the socioeconomic status of the birthparent and/or the adoptive parent, the lower the probability the child will commit any criminal violations.

Well-Being in Klamath: Variation in Socioeconomic Status and Community Capacity   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
A summary of the subregional averages of capacity scores, socioeconomic scores, and individual socioeconomic scale components is presented in Table 5.
Although the Trinity subregion has the lowest average socioeconomic score on the seven-point scale, the North Coast subregion has a lower average on the continuos socioeconomic scale, since the former value is an average of integers.
This does not imply that the entire population of the Northern Sacramento Valley subregion has a higher socioeconomic status than the population of the Trinity subregion; only that average status scores of 15 aggregations in the Northern Sacramento Valley are higher than those of the 10 aggregations in Trinity.

Socioeconomics or Socio-economics is the study of the relationship between economic activity and social life.
Socioeconomics typically analyze both the social impacts of economic activity and economic impacts of social activity.

For the purposes of assigning indices of socioeconomic status, locational accessibility to services and payment classification to hospital episodes, the relevant data assigned to the first hospital record in a transfer set was the one used to assign the indices for that entire episode of care.
An index of socioeconomic disadvantage was determined for each episode of care by transformation of the collector's district (cd), or postcode where cd was unavailable, into numeric values of social disadvantage using the SEIFA (Socioeconomic Indices for Areas) index of relative disadvantage [16] based on Census data for 1996.

 Socioeconomic Status
A family's socioeconomic status is based on family income, parental education level, parental occupation, and social status in the community (such as contacts within the community, group associations, and the community's perception of the family), note Demarest, Reisner, Anderson, Humphrey, Farquhar, and Stein (1993).
Families with high socioeconomic status often have more success in preparing their young children for school because they typically have access to a wide range of resources to promote and support young children's development.
As a result, children from families with low socioeconomic status are at greater risk of entering kindergarten unprepared than their peers from families with median or high socioeconomic status.

 Health Program: Health Guidelines
Although health factors that are inherited and exacerbated by low- to moderate-socioeconomic status cannot be completely undone by access to quality healthcare and a healthy environment, increased access can ameliorate the physical and psychological consequences of social and economic injustice.
The goal of the health program is to improve people’s health and wellbeing, especially those who confront barriers due to low- to moderate-socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, or gender; recognizing the link between physical health and the economic, social, environmental, psychological, and spiritual factors that affect individuals, families, and communities.
To assure that people, especially those that are vulnerable due to low- to moderate-socioeconomic status, race, or ethnicity, can grow-up, live, and work in a healthy environment and have access to products and food that have not been contaminated in ways that could undermine health.

Socioeconomic Status of Women with Diabetes --- United States, 2000
To assess the socioeconomic status of women with diabetes, CDC analyzed data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), which indicated that the socioeconomic status of women with diabetes in 2000 was markedly lower than that of women without diabetes.
Data on level of education and annual household income were used to assess socioeconomic status; marital status, size of household, and employment status were used as indicators of living arrangements; and household size was derived by adding the number of adults and number of children aged <17 years.
Although socioeconomic status might be influenced adversely by factors related to having diabetes (e.g., being unemployed or retiring early), most women with diabetes in this survey were diagnosed long after they had completed their education.

MCG Researchers Target Interplay of Genes and Socioeconomic Status in Childhood Obesity   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Socioeconomic status may affect the expression of genetic susceptibility to obesity, according to researchers at the Medical College of Georgia.
The researchers used the education level of the children’s fathers as a measure of socioeconomic status, because typically a father’s education influences the family’s breadwinning capacity, said Dr. Snieder.
For some of these genes, socioeconomic status was a strong determinant of whether or not subjects expressed the effects of the gene and were obese.

By Will Boggs, MD NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Individuals of lower socioeconomic status are at higher risk of HIV-related death than are other individuals, probably because of their lower likelihood of receiving triple therapy, according to a report in the October 18th issue of AIDS.
Robert Hogg from St. Paul's Hospital and University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and colleagues examined whether socioeconomic status was associated with HIV-1-related mortality since the advent of HAART among 1408 participants in an open-access, universal healthcare setting.
After adjustment for demographic variables, age, and sex, the low socioeconomic group was 2.41 times as likely as the high socioeconomic group to die during the study period, the results indicate.

NIH Guide: SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS AND HEALTH ACROSS THE LIFE COURSE
While the overall relationship of SES to mortality may attenuate in older ages, socioeconomic position continues to be linked to the prevalence of disability and chronic and degenerative diseases, including cardiovascular disease, many cancers, and Alzheimer's disease.
Usually socioeconomic status is conceptualized as an attribute of an individual (or the person's family or household) that consists of different dimensions.
Particular attention should be directed to the appropriateness of different measures by gender, race/ethnicity, nativity and immigrant status, household structure, relation to the labor force (e.g., in retirement), and rural-urban residence.

Low SES has been shown to be an independent predictor of higher mortality rates [1,2], higher disease prevalence [3,4], higher hospitalization rates [5-7], and poorer treatment response and prognosis [8,9] for a wide range of illnesses across many countries with differing health care systems [10].

Socioeconomic status determines life expectancy in HIV patients
HIV patients with a low socioeconomic status are likelier to die much more often than patients with higher levels of wealth and education, a new UCLA study has found.
These findings are of concern given the high rates of HIV among patients with low socioeconomic status (SES), according to the study, led by Dr. William Cunningham, professor of general internal medicine and health services research at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
The patients in the low socioeconomic group had less than $50,000 in accumulated wealth and annual incomes below $25,000, did not have high school degrees, and were unemployed.
