Topic: Socioecology

  Socioecology
Socioecological models try to explain social organization in terms of ecological factors that influence social interaction patterns.
Most models of primate socioecology concentrate on aspects of feeding ecology, particularly the degree and nature of competition that individuals face both within and outside their groups.
More recently, the protection that males may offer females and their young against infanticidal male rivals has also featured in these models.

The complexity of sociological interactions between territorial adults and juveniles, and among juveniles, is likely to be context dependent, based on such factors as density of the population and the stressful nature of the abiotic environment (Stamps and Tanaka 1981, Stamps et al.

Historically, studies of primate socioecology have been in the forefront of the field and many interesting methodological developments in comparative socioecology have emerged from earlier work.
Socioecology, as used here, is taken to represent the interactions between characteristics of the resource base, its mode of exploitation, reproductive biology and life history, and the observed social system.

Evolutionary socioecology then asks and seeks to answer the same question about ecologically versus socially oriented characteristics as well as the purely social.
In discussing some general principles of the evolutionary socioecology of communication, this paper pays particular attention to the sometimes cooperative, sometimes antagonistic, and often mixed nature of social communication.

Our aim is to give access to a set of resources gathered during a lot of stays, missions, expeditions or travels in the African continent, North of the Equator.
These documents have been collected in the frame of the activities of the Laboratory of Socioecology and Conservation (UCBL1, Lyon University, France) or for the NGO Conservation and Sustainable Development.
They represent a base of knowledge for everybody involved in different aspects of the study of biodiversity on the African continent, concerned by its issues, or interested by the displays of the landscapes, forgetting not some manifestations of a species we particularly care for it, Homo sapiens.

My major research interest is in the comparative socioecology of neotropical primates - I study the way in which ecological variables such as the abundance and distribution of food resources and conspecifics shape the behavior and social relationships of individuals and ultimately determine the kinds of societies we see primates living in.
Eduardo Fernandez-Duque studying the socioecology of monogamy using three species of New World primates - owl monkeys, titi monkeys, and sakis - as models.
Finally, with several of my students and field assistants, I have also recently begun work on several other projects including a comparative study of vocal communication in woolly and spider monkeys and a comparative study of male-male, female-female, and intersexual relationships in both woolly monkeys and spider monkeys.

Does chimpanzee maturation factor into the formation of bands and marauding males?

Exploring these issues and many others, the contributors to Primate Life Histories and Socioecology provide the first systematic attempt to understand how primate life histories influence behavior and vice versa.

Topics covered include how primate life histories interact with diverse social structures; how the slow maturation of primates affects the behavior of both the young and their adult caregivers; and the reciprocal relationships between large brains and increased social and behavioral complexity.
The first collection of its kind, this book will interest a wide range of researchers, from anthropologists and evolutionary biologists to psychologists and ecologists.

A biological anthropologist, James Moore works primarily on nonhuman primate socioecology--the interaction amongst ecology, social structure, and social behavior--and how the study of chimpanzee socioecology can inform us about early hominids.
Moore, who joined UCSD in 1985, is one of a growing number of scientists who have suggested that the AIDS virus most likely dates back to the 1930s, when it crossed over from chimpanzees to humans in central West Africa.
Moore has published widely on topics related to primate behavior and evolution, focusing primarily on chimpanzee socioecology but including langurs(cooperation and infanticide among males) and incidental work on baboons, macaques and gorillas.
