In general, the--undemocratic--social planner, paired with a "representative consumer," can represent politics in a very stylised and internally consistent manner, but the theoretical cost of such an approach includes the abstraction from decision-making processes determining political parties' policy objectives and the resultant politico-economic dynamics caused by the periodic "re-evaluations" of market outcomes.
Using simple tools, this paper aims at modelling the essential dynamics in the relationship among voters, their elected representatives, and the government, which are deemed necessary to understand the mechanisms by which (i) parties stick to their promises, (ii) individuals express and coordinate their political preferences, and (iii) a country's politico-economic development path is determined.
Having political parties represent the institutional link between the government and the electorate, and by describing the factors behind the evolution of their respective policy programmes, this paper will argue that Fukuyama's (1989) eulogy on history was premature.
