Previous cabinet led by Leszek Miller resigned on 2nd of May 2004, just after Poland's admission to the European Union.
In March some prominent SLD's politicians and MPs (including then Speaker of the Sejm: Marek Borowski) seceded from SLD creating new party Polish Social Democracy (Socjaldemokracja Polska) SDPL.

In the 2001 elections, it started together with Sojusz Lewicy Demokratycznej and managed to get 16 members of parliament.
Some of them have since left to join newly created Socjaldemokracja Polska.
In may 2004 in signed an alliance with SDPL, in which both parties decided to go together to the parliamentary elections, support Marek Borowski for his fight for Polish presidency and to create a new party alter the elections.

Tomasz Nałęcz (born October 10, 1949, in Gołymin) is a Polish leftist politician, vice-Speaker of the Sejm and a member of the Socjaldemokracja Polska party (Polish Social-Democracy).
In the past he used to be member of the communist Polish United Workers' Party (1970–1990) and later its social-democratic successor, Socjaldemokracja Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej.
He left the Labour Union after Socjaldemokracja Polska was founded by Marek Borowski.

Most of the members who established the party in 1999 had previously been members of SdRP (Socjaldemokracja Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej - Social Democrats of the Republic of Poland).
On March 26 the Diet speaker Marek Borowski, together with other high-ranking SLD officials, announced the creation of a new left-wing party, the Polish Social Democrats (Socjaldemokracja Polska).
On the next day, Leszek Miller announced he would step down as prime minister on May 2, the day after Poland joins the European Union.

His government encountered problems and unpopularity because of high unemployment, possible spending cuts, corruption scandals (most notably the Lew Rywin affair), and Miller's support for U.S. president George W. Bush, particularly the American-led war against Iraq in 2003.
In April 2004, Miller's former treasury minister Wieslaw Kaczmarek (now in a splinter socialist party called Socjaldemokracja Polska) accused him of illegaly using counter-intelligence services for political reasons.
Those allegations are currently being investigated by a special House Inquiry Commission (PKN Orlen investigation commission).

Perhaps, the only exact prediction was the fiasco of the Polish Social Democrats (Socjaldemokracja Polska - SdPl) and Democratic Party (Partia Demokratyczna - Demokraci.pl).
They both did not pass the electoral barrier.

Social Democracy of Poland (Socjaldemokracja Polska, SDPL) is a new leftist political party in Poland founded in April 2004 as a splinter group from Sojusz Lewicy Demokratycznej (it should not be confused with a former party Socialdemocracy of the Republic of Poland - SdRP).
In May 2005 the party reached an agreement to go to the parliamentary elections with Unia Pracy and Zieloni 2004; it also has its own candidate in the presidential race, party leader Marek Borowski.
