Smart Computing Encyclopedia Entry - Socket 7   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Socket 7 is one of several types of connections employed by processor manufacturers to secure the CPU to the computer’s motherboard.
For the average computer user, Socket 7 technology is important in that it allows, in theory, for quick processor upgrades.
Socket 370: A connection identical in size to Socket 7 technology but consisting of fewer pins and a different voltage.

Socket 7 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Socket 7 is a physical and electrical specification for the x86 processor socket matching the pins on Pentium microprocessors manufactured by Intel, and compatibles made by Cyrix, AMD and others.
Socket 7 uses a SPGA socket, either a 296 pin LIF arranged at 37x37 (which is very rare), or the much more common 321 pin ZIF arranged at 19x19.
An extension of Socket 7, Super Socket 7 was designed to allow the AMD K6-2 and AMD K6-III chips to operate at a higher clock rate and use AGP.

Super Socket 7 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Super Socket 7, also referred to as "Super 7", is an extension of the Socket 7 ZIF socket specification.
Super Socket was used by AMD K6-2 and K6-III processors.
Super Socket 7 is backward compatible with Socket 7, meaning a Socket 7 CPU can be used with a Super Socket 7 motherboard, but a Super Socket 7 CPU would not be able to run at full speed on a Socket 7 motherboard.

socket - Linux socket interface Linux Man Page   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
The BSD compatible sockets are the uniform interface between the user process and the network protocol stacks in the kernel.
socket(2) creates a socket, connect(2) connects a socket to a remote socket address, the bind(2) function binds a socket to a local socket address, listen(2) tells the socket that new connections shall be accepted, and accept(2) is used to get a new socket with a new incoming connection.
Specify the minimum number of bytes in the buffer until the socket layer will pass the data to the protocol or the user on receiving These two values are not changeable in Linux and their argument size is always fixed to 1 byte.

Socket - Normally a socket is where your limbs are attached to, as in "I'm going to rip your arm out of the socket." In network speak a socket is composed of an IP address and a port number.
Intel initially designed Socket 370 to work with Celeron processors because socket designs are cheaper than Intel's Slot 1 and the Celeron didn't use any L2 cache, which was external at the time and the main reason for a slot design.
Socket 4 - A comparably large socket that was used with the original Pentium 60 and 66 processors.

 7.2.1 Socket Objects
The socket must be bound to an address and listening for connections.
Some notes on socket blocking and timeouts: A socket object can be in one of three modes: blocking, non-blocking, or timeout.
The blocking and timeout modes are shared between file descriptors and socket objects that refer to the same network endpoint.

 Obituary - Slot 1, Slot A, Socket 7, K6, and Baby AT!
Socket A CPU's are cheaper to make and that is the reason I say Slot A motherboards and CPUs are essentially history right now.
The K6-2 and Socket 7 motherboards are therefore dead or will be shortly (in a month or so) when motherboard manufacturers, etc. have unloaded their Slot A boards, and production of the Socket A motherboards ramps-up and prices for them drop, which they will.
The death of the Socket 7 CPU and motherboard marks the inevitable demise of the oldest of these friends, the Baby AT form factor.

FIONREAD For SOCK_STREAM sockets, the number of bytes currently readable from this socket is returned in the integer with the address arg.
For SOCK_DGRAM sockets, the number of bytes currently readable, plus the size of the sockaddr structure (defined in <sys/socket.h>), is returned in the integer with the address arg.
SIOCATMARK For SOCK_STREAM TCP sockets, on return the integer with the address arg is non-zero if the inbound TCP stream has been read up to where the out-of-band data byte starts; otherwise the inbound TCP stream has not yet been read up to where the out-of-band data byte starts.

Furthermore, Socket 7 has been embraced by Intel competitors AMD and Cyrix, who have designed not only Pentium-class processors but also sixth-generation chips (AMD's K6 and Cyrix's 6x86MX) to fit the standard.
Socket 7 motherboards were the first to incorporate integral voltage regulators modules, to supply the lower (sub 3.3 volt) voltages required to internally power newer generation processors.
Not all Socket 7 motherboards support the lower voltages, however; it was up to the motherboard manufacturer to plan for the future and make this flexibility an option, and not all of them did this before the first Pentium with MMX was released that required sub-3-volt power.

They also can't make Socket 7 motherboards with Intel's latest system chip sets (because the chip sets aren't compatible with Socket 7), and they face a more limited choice of chip-set suppliers for SEC motherboards because some would-be suppliers don't have an Intel license.
