Socket 754 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Socket 754 is a CPU socket originally developed by AMD to succeed its powerful Athlon XP platform (Socket 462, also referred to as Socket A).
Socket 754 was the first socket developed by AMD to support their new consumer version of the 64 bit microprocessor family known as AMD64.
Socket 754 is a budget-minded socket, for use with AMD Athlon 64 or Sempron processors.

Socket A - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Socket A (also known as Socket 462) is the CPU socket used for AMD processors ranging from the Athlon Thunderbird to the Athlon XP/MP 3200+, and AMD budget processors including the Duron and Sempron.
The socket is a zero insertion force pin grid array type with 453 pins (nine pins are blocked in the socket to prevent accidental insertion of Socket 370 CPUs, hence the number 462).
Socket A is considered a discontinued architecture (replaced by socket 754 and socket 939), although chips and motherboards are still in circulation.

 Looking At Socket 754
Even assuming socket 939 will squeeze out 5-10% more performance than the current socket 940 (and 10% is probably too high), $200 for what will probably be about 10% extra performance hardly qualifies as great bang for the buck.
Socket 754 will generally let you slightly match or beat overclocked Intel Northwood systems, will certainly give you less grief and concern that any Prescott system, and eventually will give you the chance of running x86-64.
Socket 939 will almost certainly widen the performance gap between dual- and single-channel Hammer platforms, but you're basically hoping AMD changes its mind and puts out a slower Newcastle than they current plan to put out at a more reasonable price, which they probably won't do.

There were many early adopters when Socket 754 first came out, as it was a cheaper upgrade than the upgrade to Socket 940 for Athlon 64 FX.
At that time, both platforms had their limitations - Socket 754 was limited by its inability to utilise dual channel memory, while Socket 940 was limited by the cost of processors and the requirement for registered memory, further increasing costs.
At that time, there was no distinct reason to upgrade from Socket 754, as AMD were still releasing processors for the aging socket.

AMD Socket 754 Barebone Computer Systems
Socket 754 refers to the type and specifications for a socket (CPU holder) which will accept and correctly connect certain CPUs (Central Processing Unit) to a motherboard.
The CPU drops into the socket (only one way of course) and then a lever on the side of the socket locks it into place.
Today's Socket 754 barebone systems are not as affordable as other barebone systems and barebone kits but do make fast operating computers.

Fourth, enthusiasts have found that many Socket 754 boards, like the recently reviewed DFI LANParty UT nF3-250Gb, overclock those bargain processors very well - often reaching beyond the performance that can be achieved with overclocked 939 processors, which are more expensive.
All of these factors have encouraged some manufacturers to introduce new Socket 754 motherboards aimed at the enthusiast even after the Socket 939 was launched and processors were available.

AMD has stated before that socket 754 will remain the socket for the mainstream value user while the higher end sockets will change multiple times.
If the 754 CPU has the latest refinement found in the 939 (754 Palermo vs 939 Venice), then the speed advantage of 939 platform would be limited to dual channel (perhaps 50 to 70MHz in CPU core speed).

Breathing more life into Socket 754, there are now SLI-Capable Motherboards for the “junior” Athlon64 socket.
Socket 754, the original Athlon64 socket, is now designed to be “entry-level”, in conjunction with the Sempron and/or early Athlon64 processors.
Though AMD has no plans to continue releasing processors for Socket 754, the Sempron is earning a reputation as a popular hobby chip, and once SLI capable nVidia cards come down in price you might get a very big punch out of this sort of combination.

Huh? AMD Socket 754 PCI-E from Asus? - TeamCTF   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
One day while browsing the Asus Global website, I saw something which I thought was odd; an AMD Athlon64 socket 754 nForce4 motherboard with support for PCI Express...
Very soon after my well-researched purchase, AMD switched to the socket 939 form factor, and left me with little hope of upgrading to PCI-E without purchasing a new cpu with a new motherboard (about a $500 investment rather than the $100-$150 for a new mobo alone).
Obviously, the main drawback of this solution is the fact that Socket 754 Athlon64 CPUs only have access to a single-channel memor controller, so if you want top-notch memory bandwidth, you're going to want to avoid this mobo.

X-bit labs Community :: View topic - Socket 754 better deal than 939
They claimed that some socket 939 processors are actually cheaper than their socket 754 counterparts.
Not that theres anything wrong with socket 754, infact in earlier times I would recomend socket 754 for the budget concious, because there were considerably cheaper motherboards, and a 3000+ socket 754 outperforms a 3000+ socket 939 due to clock speeds and such.
Right now, I can only see socket 754 serving the tight budget PCs, all the Semprons, which are also great for overclocking, and only 754 has the AMD64 2800+, which is still a great performer (think a 939 3000+ without dual channel).

This has to be good news for early Athlon 64 supporters who bought their CPUs in the old days when socket 754 was a lonely Athlon 64 socket but now it's became obsolete and lost the game against more advanced socket 939.
