Socorro County is a county located in the U.S. state of New Mexico, United States.
Socorro was originally the name given to a Native American village (see: Pueblo Indians) by Don Juan de Oñate in 1598.
Socorro county ranges in elevation from approximately 1,380 m on the banks of the Rio Grande to 3,287 m at the top of South Baldy peak in the Magdalena mountains.

One fascinating fact about the history of Socorro is that during the Pueblo Revolt of 1690, the Pilabó Pueblo fled with the Spanish, and Socorro wasn't settled again until the early 19th century.
It might have remained a small town except for the discovery of rich mines of self-fluxing silver ore. The silver brought the railroad, and by the 1890's, Socorro was the largest town in the state.
Among other things, Socorro showcases the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, the San Miguel Mission, built on the ruins of the original Spanish mission in the pueblo, and plenty of Victorian-style buildings from its mining heyday.
