Soda lime - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Soda lime is a mixture of chemicals, used in granular form in closed breathing environments, such as general anaesthesia, submarines, rebreathers and recompression chambers, to remove carbon dioxide from breathing gases to prevent CO2 retention and carbon dioxide poisoning.
An indicating dye is incorporated in the soda lime, which changes the colour of the soda lime after the active ingredient is consumed.
As the reaction between carbon dioxide and soda lime is exothermic, temperature sensors, such as thermocouples along the length of the scrubber can be used to measure the position of the front and therefore the life of the scrubber.

As the acidic carbon dioxide is absorbed by the soda lime, the granules become less alkaline and change color from white to blue, purple, or pink.
A small amount of regeneration of soda lime may occur when the absorber is not in use, but the color change quickly returns in the presence of carbon dioxide.
The soda lime granules should be changed when the color change has occurred for 3/4 of the visible area of the canister, after about 6 hours of use, or when the inspired carbon dioxide tension exceeds 1%.

It probably has less impurities than lime and would not require slaking, or in the case of hydrated lime, be as difficult to disperse.
Both lime and soda ash may be used sequentially to soften water depending on the composition of the raw water.
Obviously, the chemical costs for lime are lower and because the costs of maintenance and reliability (which was a primary concern in my operation) are not as easily determined, they are usually overlooked by designers.

They are not the same because the amount of water absorbed by the soda lime depends on the amount of CO2 produced by microbes, which depends on the sample.

However, the sludge produced by soda ash is gelatinous, slow to settle, and difficult to filter.
With heavy metals and sulfuric acid, lime creates large quantities of calcium sulfate dihydrate, a sludge that settles very slowly, and is difficult to filter and dewater.
Lime (CaO) and hydrated lime however are highly caustic and can cause immediate damage to the environment.

Soda lime also contains water (since the carbon dioxide must be dissolved before it can react), a pH sensitive dye which indicates when exhaustion of the soda lime is taking place, and silica to preserve its granularity.
There are two types of soda lime in use, one of which turns from white to purple when it is exhausted, the other changing from pink to white upon exhaustion, which may result in confusion.
The contents of a typical soda lime canister will provide around 8 hours of use in small animals and it should then be changed whether or not it has changed color.

The tank with soda lime will have less heat than the one with air and the one with vinegar and baking soda.
The normal air and baking soda and vinegar experiments reached a final temperature of 30 C while the experiment using soda lime only reached 28 C in the same period of time.
These results show that carbon dioxide retains heat since the experiment in which this gas was removed with soda lime never reached the same temperature as those experiments which had carbon dioxide in the tank.

One of the major sources of soda ash (NA) and caustic soda (NaOH) in North America is the refining of naturally occurring trona ores.
In the production of soda ash from trona, reacting the bicarbonate containing liquid with lime is one of the processes used to convert the bicarbonates in the trona to the carbonate form.
Soda and caustic soda solution are essential ingredients in an array of industrial operations, including pulp and paper, glass manufacture, water treatment, flue glass tratment, soap and detergents, bleach, petroleum products and alumina, along with many other uses in the chemical processing industry.
