Sodipodi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is designed specifically around the SVG standard, using the file format (with some extensions to hold metadata) as its native storage format.
Inkscape is a fork of Sodipodi founded by some Sodipodi developers with different goals including implementing the SVG standard as much as possible.
Sodipodi started a collection of SVG clip art containing symbols and flags from around the world.

Sodipodi renders the textual SVG code for the elements and then pipes this data to the stdin of the extension program.
Sodipodi could use this information, for example, to determine when to "grey out" and invalidate buttons of extensions that cannot be used on the current selection.
Note that the extension mustn't assume that the data it is passed is validated to meet these criteria before being called, and should always perform data filtering and validation itself, on the data it is given; consider for instance a case where the extension is used on the commandline on a SVG file directly.

Sodipodi's user interface is very similar to the GIMP's, with multiple windows and no one container window for all of them.
Sodipodi's tool window allows you to hide tools you aren't using, or snap off a palette for the tools you use the most.
Sodipodi offers absolutely nothing over Inkscape except for its interface, which is a very poor GIMP imitation and is reported by many to be incomparably worse than that or Inkscape.

Inkscape started as a fork of Sodipodi and Inkscape would not be where it is today without having had the base of Sodipodi to build on.
Sodipodi uses for the freehand tool an algorithm similar to that of the calligraphic tool, with parameters like drag and mass (not adjustable, however, as of 0.34); this makes the tool seem to adapt how closely the curve should match the mouse's path, whereas in Inkscape one must choose a fixed tolerance in advance.
Sodipodi requires a separate installation of GTK libraries which although more complicated can be helpful if you wish to use less diskspace/bandwidth by sharing the same version of GTK (and settings) with other applictions GTK applications such as the GIMP, GAIM and more.

Sodipodi differs from The GIMP in that it remembers pictures as a set of simple elements, such as lines, circles and stars.
There are two sorts provided by sodipodi - linear gradients, that run from one colour to another colour in a certain direction; and radial gradients, which expand from a single point.
Sodipodi's gradients currently can only move from one colour to another colour - eventually they will be able to move through a selection of colours like in The GIMP.

Right now we"ve created a patch to modify Sodipodi so that we have more control over the exported PNG file (we can specify where it is exported to and the width/height).

since sodipodi is drawing to a pixmap store at this time, then the pixmap store is never initialized, thus corrupt data, since the normal rulers don't do this it doesn't ever show up.
