Sodium and potassium meta are different - one contains sodium and the other potassium.
Sodium meta is slightly more effective and slightly cheaper, but it has a bad rap because in general people want to lower their sodium intake.
Sodium meta is stronger than potassium - 64% SO2 vs. 57%.

Thus, the SO2 content of sodium metabisulphite is 2 x 64.1/190.2 = 67.4% and that of potassium metabisulphite is 2 x 64.1/222.4 = 57.6%.
Sulphur dioxide (in the metabisulphite form, or otherwise) is sensitive to high temperatures and humidity.
However, consistency of the tablet size in manufacturing is questionable, and many winemakers claim there is little certainty that tablets contain the amount of metabisulphite they are intended to (figures have been seen to vary by up to at least 25%).

Apart from the chemical formulae, there are a few reasons why potassium metabisulphite salts (KMBS) are used in winemaking instead of the cheaper sodium metabisulphite (sodium metabisulphite is still available for those wishing to use it as a form of sanitizer for equipment).
Potassium metabisulphite has a higher sulphur content, and also keeps better, therefore making it a more efficient additive (sodium meta starts to smell like lye after exposure to air).
The main reason sodium metabisulphite isn't used anymore, is that it may be risky to diabetics.
