Topic: Sodium monofluorophosphate

  Fluorides (IARC Summary & Evaluation, Supplement7, 1987)
Sodium fluoride was tested in three experiments in three different strains of mice by oral administration.
Sodium fluoride did not induce DNA strand breaks in testicular cells of rats treated in vivo and did not cause chromosomal aberrations in bone-marrow or testicular cells or sister chromatid exchanges in bone-marrow cells of mice treated in vivo.
Stannous fluoride, sodium monofluorophosphate and sodium silicofluoride did not induce sex-linked recessive lethal mutation in Drosophila, and sodium monoflourophosphate did not induce dominant lethal mutations in Drosophila [ref: 7].

 Dentifrices containing alpha-alumina trihydrate - Patent 4343786
A toothpaste as in claim 4 in which said alkali metal monofluorophosphate is sodium monofluorophosphate and said alkali metal fluoride is sodium fluoride.
The foregoing formulation may be made in a conventional manner as by mixing the humectant (sorbitol), gelling agent (dentifrice grade sodium carboxymethyl cellulose) and water, adding saccharin, benzoic acid and flavour, then adding the abrasive (alpha-alumina trihydrate), including the finely divided titanium dioxide whitener, deaerating, and mixing in the detergent (sodium lauryl sulphate).
From the foregoing it will be observed that the use of sodium fluoride in the toothpaste containing alpha-alumina trihydrate of high alkalinity tends to cause attack of unlined aluminum tubes even when the initial pH of the toothpaste is such that attack would be inhibited in the absence of the sodium fluoride.

 7. Fluoride therapy for osteoporosis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
These studies were criticized, mainly on the basis of the fluoride dose and pharmaceutical preparation used,[810] and a subsequent re-evaluation of the data from the Mayo Clinic study[11] suggested that the adverse effects of the initial study[7] might be accounted for in part by the high fluoride dose used.
Sodium monofluorophosphate (Na) produces no gastrointestinal toxicity, but can give rise to skeletal toxicity.[28] Slow-release NaF (SR-NaF) appears to have a significant osteogenic action without side effects when given intermittently.[15] The intermittent dosage schedule may be responsible for part of the benefit of this treatment.

Some people are sensitive to a common ingredient in most toothpaste called sodium lauryl sulfate that can cause canker sores.
For example, a 10% w/w solution of sodium fluoride would be made by first dissolving 10 grams of sodium fluoride in a solvent (most probably water in this case) and then adding solvent to a final weight of 100 grams of solution.

Sodium Monofluorophosphate ( MFP ) - a part of the history of nerve agents research (DFP - Sarin - Soman)
Though he could prepare a number of monofluorophosphate salts (among them the sodium, ammonium, potassium, silver monofluorophosphates) he was unable to prepare the free monofluorophosphoric acid, which fact posed a challenge to him (15).
During 1954 to 1957, certain data was published -by the stannous fluoride research group at the University of Indiana- indicating the relative ineffectiveness of sodium monofluorophosphate in the inhibition of dental caries.
Sodium monofluorophosphate is being used "regularly or experimentally in dental preparations manufactured in Hong Kong, Formosa, Switzerland and Sweden, as well as the U.S. Difluorophosphoric acid has been sold now for several years on a small scale as a polymerization catalyst.

Efficacy of a Dentifrice Containing 5% Potassium Nitrate and 1500 PPM Sodium Monofluorophosphate in a Precipitated ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The effect on dentinal hypersensitivity from the use of a dentifrice containing 5.0% potassium nitrate, 1500 ppm sodium monofluorophosphate in a precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) base over an eight-week period was compared to a placebo dentifrice without potassium nitrate.
A total of forty-eight subjects were entered into the study and stratified into two balanced groups according to their baseline mean thermal (air blast) and tactile (Yeaple Probe) sensitivity scores.
Thus it can be concluded from this study that the use of a dentifrice containing 5.0% potassium nitrate and 1500 ppm sodium monofluorophosphate in a precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) base is a clinically effective method for reducing dentinal hypersensitivity.
