Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, is the largest city with a population of 1.3 million and a dominant position in the country's economic, political, and cultural life.
In Sofia, as everywhere in the country, there are a lot of monuments of the fallen Russian soldiers and Russian churches which were built in the beginning of the 20-th century as a sign of deep national gratitude.
The St. Climent Ohridski University of Sofia is the oldest university in Bulgaria, having been granted its charter in 1909, and is the largest and most advanced educational and research centre in the country.

Another exception is Nadejda Georgieva (1931-1995) - her education at Sofia University was completed before the time of mathematical logic had come there, she was a professor at the Institute of Mining Engineering and taught General Mathematics, but she did research mainly in mathematical logic after a specialization abroad.
It encompassed the Faculty of Mathematics of the Sofia University and the Institute of Mathematics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
The decision was taken by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences on the 8th of November, 1972, and on the 20th of November an order of the Rector of the Sofia University and of the Head of the Academy appointed Dimiter Skordev as chief of the Sector of Mathematical Logic.
