  Instant insight: The soft cell
Understanding soft matter is essential for many biomedical applications, including physiological and artificial tissue, which is a soft composite material made from cells embedded in a polymer matrix.
Cells are complicated creatures, with sophisticated genetic programmes and all kinds of biochemical control structures, which react to a large variety of different signals impinging on the cell.
While the first studies with cells cultured on soft elastic substrates showed that cell morphology is quite different on soft versus hard substrates, very quickly it was realised that many more aspects of the life of cells are affected by extracellular stiffness, including cell migration, cell growth and division, cell death and cell differentiation.

Soft Cell was an English synthesizer duo during the early 1980s (currently re-formed).
Soft Cell's next recording, "The Girl with the Patent Leather Face," appeared as a contribution to the Some Bizzare compilation album, which featured other (then unknown) bands such as Depeche Mode, The The, and Blancmange.
Again, Soft Cell courted some controversy when their second single from the album, "Numbers," was banned from the BBC due to references in the song to the drug speed.

But from Soft Cell on this "very best of" we get exactly what it says on the tin - some particularly choice moments from the long and winding career of the electrorock glamsters Marc Almond and Dave Ball.
Unlike their peers Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet, whose music was often the very epitome of overblown '80s excess, Soft Cell's production retains an indie/alternative feel, matched in their heydey only by Gary Numan.
Although Soft Cell have now reformed and have a new record deal, this album is not meant as a career relaunch.

Bio: A synth-pop duo famed for its uniquely sleazy electronic sound, art students Marc Almond and Dave Ball formed Soft Cell in Leeds, England in 1980.
Originally, vocalist Almond and synth player Ball teamed to compose music for theatrical productions, and as Soft Cell, their live performances continued to draw heavily on the pair's background in drama and the visual arts.
While 1983's The Art of Falling Apart proved as popular as its predecessors, the LP's title broadly hinted at the internal problems plaguing the duo; prior to the release of 1984's This Last Night in Sodom, Soft Cell had already broken up.

Soft Cell - By William Saletan - Slate Magazine
"Research on embryonic stem cells raises profound ethical questions, because extracting the stem cell destroys the embryo, and thus destroys its potential for life," said Bush.
The "fundamental moral line" means nothing if the research it prohibits—or rather, the research for which it merely withholds taxpayer funds—remains undefined.
Evidently, Bush thinks federal funding of research that uses stem cells already derived from embryo destruction—the compromise he approved—doesn't "sanction or encourage" such destruction.

Unable to repeat their initial success, Almond and Ball had a few lesser hits before calling it quits as Soft Cell in 1984.
After forming bands with such clever names as Marc and the Mambas and Marc Almond and the Willing Sinners, Almond had a hit with Bronski Beat before wisely chosing to release material simply under his own name.

Soft Cell - The Night : single review
Apparently, back in 1981, when Soft Cell decided to record a synth-pop cover version of a '60s Northern Soul song, the choice came down to Tainted Love by Gloria Jones or The Night by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.
The Night is certainly good enough to trouble much of the electronic fodder currently gracing the charts.
However, just in case it does not appeal to the conventional masses, the self-explanatory B-side Perversity will doubtless keep Soft Cell's core, so-called deviant, fans more than happy.
