Soft point bullet -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Soft point bullets are designed to expand upon impact, as the softer lead is deformed to spread open the harder metal jacket.
The mechanism is the same as hollow point bullets, but the lack of a hollow depression reduces the area upon which the hydraulic pressure can act on the lead, and thus the soft point bullet expands more slowly than a hollow point.
Soft point bullets are less common than hollow points, due to the slower expansion and greater penetration, but they fill a couple of roles that hollow points do not.

TERMINAL BALLISTICS FACTS AND INFORMATION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
There are three basic classes of bullet: those designed for maximum accuracy at varying ranges, those designed to inflict maximal damage to a target by optimizing the depth to which the bullet penetrates, and those designed to maximize damage to a target by penetrating as deeply as possible.
A soft lead bullet, or a jacketed hollow_point_bullet or soft_point_bullet will flatten out on impact (if the velocity at impact is sufficient to make it deform), spreading the force over a larger area of the target, allowing more total force to be applied without damaging the steel target.
Bullets for use on humans are usually designed to comply with the FBI's penetration requirement of 12 to 18 inches (30 to 46 cm), which is based on the IWBA's requirement of 12.5 to 14 inches (32 to 36 cm).

Bullets intended for high-velocity applications are generally a lead core jacketed with copper or steel; the thin layer of copper protects the lead core during flight, delivering it intact to the target.
Bullets must have a surface which works well with the surface; it must seal, but not have too much friction.
Bullets are generally designed to penetrate, deform, and/or break apart.

Bullet   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
"Bullet" is derived from the French word "boulette" which roughly means "little ball." The original musket bullet was aspherical leaden ball two sizes smaller than the bore, wrapped in a loosely fitting paper patch which formed a tight seal so thefull pressure of the expanding gas would propel the bullet.
It was nearly identical to the Greener bullet: as designed by MiniƩ the bullet was conical in shape with with ahollow cavity in the rear end, which was fitted with a little iron cap instead of a wooden plug.
The next important change in the history of the rifle bullet occurred in 1883, whenMajor Rubin, director of the Swiss Laboratory at Thun, invented the small-calibrerifle, one of whose essential features was the employment of an elongated compound bullet, with a leaden core in a copper envelope.

Soft point bullets are less common than hollow points, due to the slower expansion and greater penetration, but they fill a couple of roles that hollow points do not.

 Spartanburg SC | GoUpstate.com | Spartanburg Herald-Journal
A soft point bullet, also known as a soft-nosed bullet, is a lead bullet with a copper or brass jacket that is left open at the tip, exposing some of the lead inside (compare to hollow point bullet), and is thus an example of a semi-jacketed round.
Bullets were jacketed to prevent fouling though this led to less significant trauma on a victim.
Flat point bullets are required in centerfire rifles with tubular magazines, such as the Winchester rifle, where the rounds are stored front-to-back.
