2000 USENIX Annual Technical Conference (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.tamu.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Soft Updates attacks the meta-data update problem by guaranteeing that blocks are written to disk in their required order without using synchronous disk I/Os.
Soft Updates rollback operations may cause more writes than would be minimally required if integrity were ignored.
If a Soft Updates system crashes, the only inconsistencies that can appear on the disk are blocks and inodes that are marked as allocated when they are actually free.

Soft updates - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computer file systems, soft updates are an approach to maintaining disk integrity after a crash or power outage.
Like journaling, soft updates do not guarantee that no data will be lost, but do make sure the filesystem is consistent.
Soft updates were first introduced to FreeBSD by Marshall Kirk McKusick and are now available across the BSDs.

Soft Updates and Snapshots (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.tamu.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Soft updates, an alternative to these approaches, is an implementation mechanism that tracks and enforces metadata update dependencies to ensure that the disk image is always kept consistent.
Indeed, the ability of soft updates to aggregate many operations previously done individually and synchronously reduces the number of disk writes by 40 to 70% for file-intensive environments (e.g., program development, mail servers, etc.).
Effective June 21, 2000 the soft updates, snapshot, and back-ground fsck code was released under a Berkeley-style copyright which allows unrestricted use in source and binary forms for commercial or non-commercial use.

 GEO Batch Deposit
SOFT is a simple line-based, ASCII, plain text format, meaning that SOFT files may be readily generated from common spreadsheet and database applications.
Data table updates are 'all-or-nothing', e.g., to revise data in one column of a table, it is necessary to update the whole table.
SOFT format is used not only for batch uploads and updates of data, but also for batch download.

Soft Updates will not cause filesystem corruption, but, if they begin causing difficulties, then they can be turned off easily with the tunefs(8) command.
Before Soft Updates can be installed, the system must have the kernel source so that the kernel can be recompiled with the necessary kernel patches.
Remember, enabling Soft Updates like any other filesystem tuning procedure must be done on unmounted filesystems; as such, executing the procedure in single user mode is imperative.

 Tuning Disks
Soft Updates drastically improves meta-data performance, mainly file creation and deletion, through the use of a memory cache.
There are two downsides to Soft Updates that you should be aware of: First, Soft Updates guarantees filesystem consistency in the case of a crash but could very easily be several seconds (even a minute!) behind updating the physical disk.
So all operations on, say, a directory are generally performed in memory before the update is written to disk (the data blocks are sorted according to their position so that they will not be on the disk ahead of their meta-data).

 FSA Updates Soft Commission Policy
The statement, according to the regulator, is designed to assist the finance industry in continuing its progress towards a market-based solution to the transparency and accountability issues raised by soft and bundled brokerage commissions.
The FSA initially set out its findings on soft and bundled brokerage commissions in a policy statement earlier this year, which concluded that fund managers' use of commission should be limited to the purchase of 'execution' and 'research'.
With regard to the concept of non-permitted services, the FSA announced that its view is that all services currently regarded as being outside the soft commission regime, as well as some of those within it, should not be paid for from commission, as they are not sufficiently connected with particular investment management decisions or transactions.

Update 2: Well, my second hunch proved to be closer to the truth:What it comes down to is that when ufs logging is turned on, the process of cleaning out the inode is placed into the transaction queue to be handled by a dedicated kernel thread and the unlink() system call immediately returns.

USENIX Technical Program - Abstract - USENIX 99 (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.tamu.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
It details the changes that were needed, both to the original research prototype and to the BSD system, to create a production-quality system.
It also discusses the experiences, difficulties, and lessons learned in moving soft updates from research to reality; as is often the case, non-focal operations (e.g., fsck and "fsync") required rethinking and additional code.
Experiences with the resulting system validate the earlier research: soft updates integrates well with existing filesystems and enforces metadata dependencies with performance that is within a few percent of optimal.

Testing the repair performance of Soft Updates by halting a benchmark in process showed no errors, whereas the conventional file system required off-line assistance before being usable in 96% or attempts, and the No Order file system yielded unresolvable inconsistencies (a disk block appears in more than one file) in 30% of trials.
Soft Updates provide a 4-19% benefit in system throughput over a traditional logging file system (presumably due to extra I/O required to maintain the log).
The block-map file is updated by copying the active file system bit to the new snapshot bit.
